All models now expect a low to form near Tasmania today, with the very coldest air pushing up in the South Australian region; all expect thicknesses near 528 in the Adelaide area. Things then begin to slacken off a little; no model is now going for anything much below 528 in Melbourne, which means snow in Melbourne itself is unlikely, although the Dandenongs should still see some. The most notable feature of today's run is how long the cold persists. Of the four main models, three have Melbourne at 532 or close to it right through until Monday night (and even GASP, which moves things off more quickly, is at 535 then). Interesting features of particular models, although longshots at this stage, are a discrete cold pool in the EC which stays sub-530 on its passage across NSW through the weekend and is still around 535 when it hits SE Queensland, and a spectacular NZ cold outbreak in GASP for the middle of next week (screaming southerlies, thicknesses below 524 over the whole South Island with 514 in Invercargill, and 850 hPa temperatures between -4 and -9). GASP also has 850 hPa temps of -1 near Alice Springs on Wednesday; definitely cold enough for snow on the ranges there, but moisture will be the problem. SA is the zone to watch for the moment. Precipitation is likely to be heavy, so anywhere above the snowline (which I would expect to be in the 400-800 metre range in the Adelaide area - obviously at the higher end that means no snow, as the highest point is in the 700s) could get heavy falls - if the snowline drops low enough the higher parts of the Adelaide Hills could get 20cm+. The southeast will be even colder, but has no hills high enough (not a lot above 200 metres down there). I know nothing of this. I would and am *extremely* doubtful of these reports. I have seen severe thunderstorms and even mesocyclones with surface temperatures or + 2 to + 5 degrees C but the instability is elevated above the cold stable layer. These layers are so cold and so stable that tornadoes don't have a chance to penetrate to the surface. Additionally, that cold air is extremely deleterious to the parent updrafts. Moreover, the cold air contains little in the way of latent heat. Les ************************ Leslie R. It's just that high shear and low buoyancy normally occur in cold fronts, hence the term "cold air tornado." Although generally, the main trigger seems to be a steep lapse rate in the lower 3-4km, and high shear (eg, 30kn at 850mb is considered a threshold I believe, but 40-50kn at 850mb is considered ideal). Barry Hanstrum from the BoM in WA has done a lot of research into "coldies" as "coldies" are common in SW WA during winter. "Coldies" do not require the presence of a mesocyclone - but I believe that some "coldies" are actually supercellular tornadoes from cold-air supercells. I believe that Chuck Doswell has written about this. I am not sure what you are referring to. We have what we call "cold air funnel clouds" but not sure I know of "coldies or cold air tornadoes". Our cold air funnels are the result of a deep, mid-level (~500 mb or higher), cut-off low, that is also a pool of cold air aloft. The environment appears to be one of large vertical vorticity and instability. These funnels have very rarely, if ever (although there have been reports), touched down. To my knowledge Chuck has not done other than mentioned these funnels. In some situations similar to the above, thunderstorms can form and are often hailers and occasionally these storms can produce tornadoes. In other situations, characterized by strong, post frontal cold air advection, the surface can warm rapidly but large lapse rates and shallow but high CAPE can produce mini supercells and tornadoes. So, if you can, please better define these "coldies" I might be able to say more.. Les ************************ Leslie R. A couple stituations I over looked. Air masses can recover rapidly and there is the potential that in the presence of very strong warm air advection, the surface temp could be + 10 or more with some snow still left on the ground and severe thunderstorms present. And in another case, funnels with condensation and weak rotation can also occur without there being actual "tornadoes". I once saw something like this yet with significant differences. I spent 18 months on a ship and once actually saw numerous vortices with condensation "cloud" extending from the sea surface to the low cloud base. These vortices were like pillars of rotating cloud scatted about. However, in that situation it was cold air over the very warm sea surface of the gulf stream near but just off the east coast of the US. There were actually super-adiabatic lapse rates such as those that drive dust devils, but were rather caused by cold air over warm water. So, there are situations where something like you suggest could actually occur but not quit what the video observer might think he/she was seeing. How "violent" was this "snownado"? I know I'll be keeping an eye on things - and as slight as a risk there is, if a cloud so much as farts, I want to be there to hear it :-) We should have some colder air coming through the upper levels before the W'ly and eventually SW'ly change. So there is a chance there...I know it's a W'ly/SW'ly front - but still, might get interesting! We'll see what happens! Currently 5:45pm here, 21.5C, 1011hPa falling, light N'ly and a DP of 17.5C. Some rain patches about in the Lockyer Valley and Granite Belt. Also 1 at Mt. Lofty last time I looked. Most of the shower activity near Melbourne has cleared for the time being. Interesting to note that NSW are forecasting max temps of 3 for Goulburn and Orange for Sunday. Orange is a possibility, but I think it may be a little ambitious for Goulburn, which isn't normally any more susceptible to extreme low max temps than Canberra is (and Canberra has only ever had two days below 3, one of which was with a cold outbreak and one with persistent fog). I'll be up around Wangaratta/Beechworth on the weekend - won't have the chance to post to the list, but will ring someone if I see anything interesting. We're running at around 500m elevation on Sunday morning, which could well be near or above the snowline. We were there for no more than 5 minutes when hail started to fall from the cloud above, wasn't that heavy and it wasn't all that wet either. Only fell for about 30 seconds then stopped, Kathryn and myself were sort of excited because we had not seen hail for a while. We sat in the car slowly watching the temperature drop, when I decided to go for a look over the hill. After my return we headed to Mt Lofty Summit lookout area, we watched a heavy looking cloud come from a southerly direction the cloud base was less than 700m as Mt Lofty is around 700m and the cloud base was below us. We watched filmed and took pictures of this cloud coming in and head over us, the cloud hugging the hill line is awesome to look at, a must see if anyone come to Adelaide during winter events like this. After the cloud had gone over us (we were inside the cloud) it started to hail lightly, so we started filming again, some kids were playing near by and once the hail started coming down hard you would swear that the world was going to end, by the screams of the kids as they were pelted with 2mm hail. We got all this on video as well :) The hail continued and continued to come down and the ground was very icy. We kept filming the hail on the ground and in the garden beds. We were soaked to the bone from being inside the hail :) We decided to go back to the car for a bit of warmth. We noticed a car on the way back had hail all on it's front windsheild so we took video of it. We continued to my car which was brown, but it had changed to a whitish looking car, I had hail on it from rear bumper to front bumper, so we took video and still pictures of that too :) Temp was only 3.8c at the car :( We sat in the car desperately trying to recover from our exciting afternoon and the cold. We decided to go home it was around 5pm local. When we arrived home we checked messages okay 4 hang-ups and a message from the ABC radio, they wanted to do an interview with me talking about the ASWA and Adelaide weather, unfortunately they wanted to do the interview at 2pm local and I missed it. They also sent me an email as well, so hopefully something happens out of that (nervous twitch). We decided to watch the 6pm news, they had a reported up at Mt Lofty, BUGGER we missed them too :( We could have had twice the publicity today but we were in the wrong spot at the right time as always it seems . So now we are home watching radar, hoping it will snow on the Mount tonight so we can go back up there and do it all again. By the way very wet and very cold strong gusty winds on top of Mount Lofty experienced today. Strongest wind would have been around 30 knots easy.. Hey everyone,

Most people know about this satpic but for those who don't now is a good time to check it out.

This fantastic image shows a cold pool bearing down on the SA coastline. The satpic is very detailed and you can see the formation and structure of this 'highly anticipated' system.
