Unfortunately I will have ' family " gatherings to attend to, but will do a
local chase if things start cooking, although my sisters place at Bulli is
very poor for watching Cu from, she lives at Bulli and the sun sets at 2pm
there !!, the escarpment dominates things that much that you cannot see a
storm until its overhead.

We head west and see from there. We will have to head out by 9am so get
ready. The situation for turning with height has moved to that area. Second,
the newer cells are developing to the north of the cloud band. The LI is now
higher and broader in that area.

Can someone tell me where the moisture dry air line might be at that time as
well as the temp variations. I will check the temps

Jimmy wanted me to forward this message:

Can you please send this message to the list

We are on a chase and will be heading out west towards the Central
Tablelands. our contact details is David Croan mobile... 0412655134

If anyone has information to keep us updated with the latest don't
hesitate giving us a brief call so that we can be in the right area. The
satpics is the most important. We want fresh, large slightly curved cells
with cold cloud tops.... Supercells.. cya

Hi All,

I hope everyone had as good a christmas as I did.

24/12/98

Being christmas eve I was unable to chase but I was able to observe from
local vantage points (namely the roof of my house). I witnessed 4 cells
throughout the day and a fifth one at night. The first (1:30pm) was way
out to the east (100km from melbourne) and had a definite overshooting top.
After more christmas chores I went up to Greensborough Plaza Shopping
Centre Carpark to see two large cells to the N and NE. The closer one had
mammatus and a hail shaft which was lit up by the sun. Behind us to the SW
there was a growing Cu which as we drove home conveniently grew to Cb.
This cell passed about 10-15km S of my house and I had a great view of this
cell from it's early stages and watched it also produce a hail shaft at the
back of it. There were a few CC &CGs with this cell. The fifth cell was
late (11:30pm) and was probably 30km to the NW but it had a nice lightning
display (no photos of lightning).

Also, reports from local news - a severe storm at Phillip Island killed one
woman and injured 5 others as a result of a direct lightning strike.

25/12/98 - SANTA DELIVERS THE GOODS

Things shaped up well early in the morning. Altocumulus Castanalus
(spelling?), high humidity - looked really good at 7:45am for storm
development later in the day.

By 11:30 the temperature had risen to about 34 degrees and the air felt
really dry. Not much in the way of clouds and looked like there'd be
nothing.

Checked outside at 3:00pm after opening chrissie presents, lunch and b'day
pressies for my mum - saw significant Cu development to the W and a small
developing cell to the SW. Cells were very slow moving at this stage.
3:30pm saw more growth from Cu to west and a small Cb to the NW. Cells
were moving approximately SE so we were in line for the Cb to the NW. Over
the next 45 mins I watched it grow - the anvil was huge but it had a very
small base although there were some interesting base features with scud
forming on the S edge of the base. By 4:15pm the cell was probably 15km
away and thunder was constant (both CC and CG lightning). Mammatus had
formed on the anvil. I could now see another cell behind this smaller one
and it was significantly larger and catching the smaller cell. We left to
go to my grandparents house at about 4:45pm just as we got a few drops of
rain from the anvil of the small cell. Arrived at grandparents house at
about 4:55pm as small and large cells almost joined.

Gotta go - close lightning this morning. Finish this later.

Hi All,

Sorry about this being in two sections but I was so busy typing this that I
didn't realise the small cell (although it came and went so fast -
60-70km/h). We had 4 CG's within 2 km so I was glad I got off. More to
come later I think.

Back to the report......

I could see two distinct precipitation curtains, one brownish and the other
(larger cell) greenish tinge. Lightning was pretty regular - probably
10-15 strikes per minute. Cool outflow winds, fairly light at first
arrived as cells merged only about 4km away. Big rain drops started to
fall at about 5:10pm and a brief bit of hail (pea size) occurred within two
minutes of the rain starting. Winds picked up to about 35km/h and then it
started pouring. I was stuck in the garage and the noise was defining. It
was raining at probably 60mm per hour and you could hear a few hail stones
hitting the tin roof amongst the rain. The rain continued for 10 mins then
the hail started. Hailstones were around pea size with the biggest being
about 1cm (thumbnail). It hailed for about two or three minutes and the
winds gusted up to 60-70km/h. The rain continued for 10-15 mins after the
hail stopped. Rain had come under the back door a bit and also under the
garage door. Their driveway was practically a river during the heaviest
rain. There probably would've been some flash flooding around as I don't
think we got the worst of the storm. The air remained unstable and as you
know there was already a storm through this morning(26/12) and I have just
seen a more serious looking one approaching so I'll try to finish up.

Chritmas Eve and Christmas Day proved to be pretty good for victorians. I
know santa got me two things I asked for (three if you include the 8 rolls
of film i got). There storms have ended melbourne's thunderday drought (3
days in a row now) and hopefully it won't be so long until the next one
comes around.

Hope everyone elses christmases were as interesting as mine.

Andrew McDonald.

Hi Every1
Hope every1 got over the Christmas festivities ok ( I
survived yet again)
Well Victorias thunder drought ended Christmas Eve Whooo
hoooo and plenty of thunder this morning. Jezz that one was close flash
and bang that rattled the roof & windows Whooo hooo hooo current temp
is16Deg baro 1001 Hpa and falling, very wasm early this morning 22Deg
until 9AM then a gradual reduction in temp not much rain though only
recorded 2.5mm rain this morning. the small amount of rain the previous
2 day didnt wet your tonsils. Its raining at the moment not very heavy I
an unfortunatly not able to give decent cell reports as my location is
down in a valley and my field of veiv is only about 90 Degrees when
looking up.
Yesterday was the best for thunder from around 4Pm there was plenty of
CC,CG and one i will need some help with but i swear blind it was GC
this fork was to the north approx 3KM away unfortunatly no camera to
confirm but the well defined base leg seemed to go UP from the ground
then fork away both east and west directions with a couple of smaller
ones riring further up ( skyward) the bang that followed less than 2
seconds later was quite deafening not to mention the way the house
shook. Any comments on this one would be really appreciated as i have
never seen that before.
ay way its still raining slightly will catch up soon.

Hi all,

I've just got home (here in Geelong), so this may seem a little dated.

There's way to much low level cloud to really see what is going on, but I
can tell you there is plenty of thunder. Occasionally a flash of lightning
is visible. Going on how loud the thunder is I would say that it is quite
close and has been since around 1030.

Thankfully it has been raining since the wee hours of the morning too, we in
this part of the world need all of the water we can get. Our two main water
supplies are down to 16 and 25% of capacity, and we have been on water
restrictions since this time last year.

BTW. Yesterdays change has been followed by a blustery south westerly,
stream showers and cool temperatures. Melbourne - expect to get wet, but
not in the way we'ed all like! That's 2 months + and no thunder.........

Hi All,

It sounds as though we are the only lucky ones so far (no other states have
reported anything yet). Still very unstable. I think the southwesterly
change only reaches a few kilometres (if that) up cause when the low cloud
clears you can still see high cloud coming in from the NW. Had some very
heavy rain here today on and off. Our gutters overflowed twice. I've had
to turn the computer off about 5 times because of close lightning. It's
been an interesting three days for us down here. There is 11mm in the rain
gauge here (NE Suburbs) but it's stopped raining now (4:30pm) for the
firstr time in a while. It's bloody cold outside too.

Canberra experienced a storm that seems to have been the northern
extension of a line passing to the south.

Despite its initial promise, this is a storm that was relatively
unspectacular. We had a darkened sky for around 30 min before
any significant precipitation occured. The precipitation curtain
was preceded by gusts that would not have been much more than
about 50 -60 km/hour for a short period. I ended up receiving
3mm spread over 30 - 40 min. Thunder was heard at intervals of
about 3min for a period of around 30min just before and during
the rain.

Nice to see a little action but nothing too exciting. Perhaps
the frontal passage itself may still have a little more to offer
later this evening or tonight.

Patrick

Hi every1,

Well it sounds like I was easily pleased!
Everywhere but here (Wycheproof) seems to have gotten reasonable storms!
We had another brief (3 thunders) storm at 5.45 this morning followed by
1 mm of heavy rain (lasting 2 - 3 minutes) and one more bang of thunder
at about 11.30 a.m.
Nothing since but strong south-westerlies and the temperature is now
down to about 16 C.
Looks like the black hole of Wycheproof strikes again. :\

At least the rest of the state has had something interesting.

Cheers,
Kevin.

Hi All,

Finally things have settled down here in Melbourne - we had thunder all day
today until about 5:00pm. The longest time between thunder claps would've
been about 20 mins all day and we've had another 4mm of rain since my last
message (total of 15mm today).

Andrew McDonald.

Hi All

Another storm about 5.15pm same as last one. At the moment at 8.55pm it is
clear here but can see heavy cloud/lighting on the N/NW horizon. I would say
they are getting it at Wellington/Dubbo.
Is there anybody out that way can confirm???

Frustrating day here, we had two storms slip about 100kms to the south, and
one go to the north after dark.

Nothing here, but I did get to see the Sydney - Hobart boats out on the
horizon with full spinnakers, the NE wind was 20-25 knots.

Bureau is predicting west winds here tomorrow, this usually = sunshine a
plenty and that is the way it is forecast, but at this time of year I would
not discount the chance of a late shower, and it just may be thundery.

Will be heading up to Bathurst Tuesday - Friday, hope something develops.
