Hi all - at 6:45am there was thunder here!!! (Still going actually) Some
quite loud, basically just fairly low cloud (can't see any structure) but
they're only weak...some light rain. Mum rang me up 2mins ago to say
they've had 2 'cracks' of thunder at work though!

Brisbane has a long running history of "storm in the morning = severe storm
later." All the models point to it, so do the soundings - so lets see what
today brings us!

Anthony from Brisbane

Hi Paul,

9:38am: 28.4C, DP of 22.2C, 1008hPa steady (but fell overnight) mostly
cloudy here - most is low Cu, but in some of the breaks there's some cirrus,
and what appears to be some Altocumulus Castellanus - can't tell exactly
though because most of the low Cu is covering the sky.

We got 0.5mm from this mornings storm.

Anthony

Howdy Anthony!!

Its much the same here at the moment. Gentle breeze from the NE is blowing.
Although cloud cover is prob 7/8 Cu which is annoying, because I think that
it will destroy any chance of activity. But its wait & see I suppose. Just
looked at Satpics, and nothing of interest there yet. Oh well.........here
we go again!

mike,
well, i can't really say that much, i set the perture about halfway and
yes, exposure depends on the amount of bolts. i think most of those
lightning photos were between 30 seconds nd a couple of minutes! i was just
very fortunate i think:)

Just a note to say that I completed a chase (for want of a better word on
this occasion) summary of the squall line that moved through Sydney on
Monday (14/12). Michael has put the report and some pics up on Storm News
online.

Also my photos of the 'colourful' second severe storm of Fri 13th (13/11)
are now up.

Just follow the links to these two chases from:
http://australiansevereweather.simplenet.com/storm_news/index.html

As for today in Sydney.... a big thumbs down, as a fresh south-easterly
has blown up - looks like we will be waiting for Sunday.

Cheers

David

Hi Paul et al,
It's boring as hell here in Wycheproof ( about 30 C at 1.30 p.m. local,
with a few of the smallest Cu in the world popping up to the west.)
I'm hoping for some better action Saturday/Sunday.

Normally, around this time of year, the likes of sci.geo.meteorology
and uk.sci.weather are buzzing with speculation as to whether or not
they'll see a White Christmas. (On the occasion of my one Christmas
in North America, in 1989, I went to Winnipeg to make sure I got one,
which was something of a case of overkill given that 1989 was the
year when it dropped below 0 C at Christmas as far south as Miami).

Normally Australia is immune from such speculation. I do notice,
however, that the last day of the current ECMWF run (1200 UTC/2300 EST
24 December) has a tongue of cold air with sub-532 thicknesses reaching
latitude 40 S just west of Tasmania.

If this actually happens (and the seventh day of a prog is usually
pretty speculative) we might expect to see snow showers on Christmas
Day in the usual summer cold-outbreak snow zones (above 1000m in
Tasmania, above 1600m in the Victorian highlands and 1800m in the
Snowies).

(For the record, North America looks like it's about to turn much
colder after an extraordinarily warm few weeks - at present there is
virtually no snow on the ground outside the Rockies anywhere in the
US, and mean temps for December so far are running 8-9 C above normal
in the Midwest. Europe is anyone's guess at this stage).

I heard mention that the hail was 8cm in diameter and cause 10 million
damage, mainly windscreen & car damage! Not bad.,,,,,,................so
pay heed Brisbane Boys...........any more complaining and the East Coasters
of NSW will pay a visit!!

:-)

PS its Darwin weather here now, very humid & warm. Still not much
development to talk about though I noticed a large cell on the satpics to
the SW of Brisbane.....and some cells to the South near Taree (as usual!!).

Hi all..first warning finally
...quite disappointing sky here right now with heaps of oldish mammatus and
patches through 'broken' CB. Might be an outside chance of something in
Brissie a bit later..
Have heard of hail at Beerburrum, Glass House Mountains and Caboolture from
non severe storms.

Judging by the lightning tracker, this storm that has the warning is
actually moving ESE compared to the other north storms which seem to be
moving NE. I still think severity is likely with those around the Sunshine
Coast though.

TOP PRIORITY
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING
Issued by the Bureau of Meteorology, Brisbane
At 3.40 pm EST on Friday the 18th of December 1998
For the Southeast Coast District.

A large thunderstorm has been observed on radar in the Beaudesert area and
is
moving east at 40 km/hr .

This thunderstorm may produce severe wind squalls, heavy rain and some hail.
This storm is expected to continue moving east to southeast and reach the
Gold
Coast region in the next 1 to 2 hours .

Many other thunderstorms are developing in the district and further warnings
will be issued for these storms if they become severe.

People are advised to secure outside items, move cars under cover and seek
shelter.
The next warning will be issued at 4.30 pm.

Jimmy here,

At the moment, there seems to be storms right across the top end. Michael is
going up the coast so some of you might want to meet. He should be lucky to
get storms.

Chasers down here may also be on the prowl.... but perhaps north of Sydney.
The favourable LI was just to the north of Sydney which meant we missed out.
It either changed from when I saw it 2 days ago or I misread it. Best of
luck for those under it all...

New Zealand has had a number of high country white christmases, recent
ones being in 1989 (most of the snow actually fell on Christmas Eve), 1982,
and 1975. The 1975 event was probably the most significant - most lowland
areas having a psuedo white christmas with widespread hail (a common
feature of cold outbreaks in summer). On Boxing Day 1975, there were even
reports of light snow as low as 200 metres in southern Hawkes Bay
(southeastern North Island) - in places that don't often get snow even in
winter!.
Back to the present, models show some cool air possibly approaching NZ for
December 25 - maybe some white stuff on the southern mountains. (snow fell
on the higher levels of the Southern Alps on Christmas Day last year)

NSW,QLD and WA from today so I was hoping someone would be able to fill me
in on a bit of detail. As I'm from Melbourne I don't get to see many
severe TS (actually any TS for that matter - our quietest Nov & Dec for a
few years - no TS since late Oct if I remember correctly).

Andrew McDonald.

PS Do you have and ICQ # ???

I suppose they are out photographing the lightning or something. For those
in Victoria, if you want severe weather, there may be a chance if you head
into S NSW / N Vic on Sunday. Be there ready rather than seeing the storms
on satpics. I would check out the LI (Lifted Index), trough situation, and
the dry air and moist air boundaries before making thatdecision to head NE.

  Hi Andrew,

No, I don't have ICQ, I'm on a Macintosh and they really don't like
that programme!

As for the storms, I can only assume that everyone is still out
chasing. There's been nothing in Sydney again, but the Northern rivers/
Se Queensland areas have been going off from what I've been able to find
out on the net. The lightning tracker has been going crazy since about
mid day and has just started to slow down now. Wish I was there!

Hi Jimmy

I was actually planning to do just that but I have a tennis tournament on
Sunday so I guess all I can hope for is an early round loss so I can get
away.

I will hopefully be sending some photo's which I am planning to get scanned
soon to you so people can actually see that we do have those things called
thunderstorms down here in Melbourne.

Good luck for you and anyone else who chases tomorrow. I am considering
going west tomorrow arvo for some late action near the border.

Andrew McDonald.

Hi all,

Well, today was certainly a mixture of excitement and anti-climax! Here, I
had about 6 storms, all pretty much sideswiped me! All up, I've had about
3.5 to 4 hours of thunder (where thunder has been heard within 5minutes of
the last rumble) But only 0.5mm of rain - all gave some spits and a fresh
breeze though.

Some severe thunderstorms did develop - the Sunshine Coast sustained some
fallen trees and powerlines, with 10,000 homes blacked out - some minor roof
damage to some houses as well. But not much coverage - most was on this dam
'desert fox!'

Some storms still around Stanthorpe, but I'm beginning think that maybe it's
too much to hope for a good storm unfortunately :( Although stranger things
have happened!

Anthony from Brisbane
