Hi all

Just to point out an obvious mistake in the advice. It says gusts to
270km/h - which should be 170km/h. Perhaps it'll reach that strength in the
next 2 days maybe.

>VERY DESTRUCTIVE WINDS with gusts to 270 kilometres per hour are
>expected to develop over the Tiwi Islands and Coburg Peninsular
>during tomorrow as the core of the cyclone moves closer.

Unfortunately I go back to work next wednesday, but any weekend chase may be
possible. It has been a very frustrating year with lots of action from the
mid north coast northwards, but little southwards.

Hey

A little while ago someone posted a message with the login and password for
the Realtime Observations (becouse at the time the L: test P: test wasn't
working at the time). I had to Re-install my emailer today and i cant
access the message with the longin and password anymore. I'm pretty sure
the login was Bomw0057 and there was a password for November and a different
one for December. If you posted this message could you post it again

G'Day Everyone,

I agree with the arguments put forward about the name requiring a degree
of credibility and professionalism. Thus, I'll re-submit my vote. Either of
the following two names are more than acceptable to me.

    Australian Severe Weather Society (ASWS)

    or

    Australian Severe Weather Association (ASWA)

Cheers,

hey guys,
well, the most strangest thing happened this morning. at 4 a.m (qld time)
we were awoken by continuous thunder, couldn't see any lightning cos i was
still in bed and the blinds were shut. but then we had a big flash of
lightning, it would have been within 100m for sure cos there was very
little time delay!! so i got out of bed and walked on the balcony but
couldn't see the lightning cos it was behind us. the thing is, i've never
heard lightning like this b4, it sounded different. so, after hearing and
watching the storm for about half an hour, it all of a sudden stopped and
was never heard of again. it was like someone flicked the switch at the
powerpoint. what could make a storm just stop?? anyway, the whole thing was
totally awesome!!!!

Hi All

I would also like to resubmit my vote for Australian Severe Weather
Association (ASWA)

I agree with what everyone has been saying about our name needing to have a
more professional approach and meaning to what we do. It's not just chasing.

Hi Brian

I can help more with transferring notes and address to the e-mail. Its
really quite simple to do when you know how. Simply go to the web page that
you want to show in the e-mail. If you want to include an address, left
click once on the title then right click and select COPY. Then go to the
e-mail and put the cursor in the place where you want the address to show
and either right click and select PASTE or press CTRL+V.

For adding info from the page, press and hold the mouse button at the
beginning of the text that you want to transfer and drag the mouse down
until everything you want to include is highlighted. Then the procedure is
pretty much the same as before, right click and select COPY, go to the
e-mail, place the cursor where you want it to go, right click and select
PASTE.

With the abbreviations, the only ones I know that have been coming up lately
and quite frequently are

TC - Tropical Cyclone
CG - Cloud to Ground Lightning
CC - Cloud to Cloud Lightning

If there is any other's let us know and we will inform you as to what they
mean

Hope this info helps

Regards

Greg Spencer

our area, but since about 10am edst today I have been getting an
"unable to locate server....does not have a DNS entry" error. I need
to work out whether it's a problem with my ISP's DNS tables or a
broader problem.

Many Thanks

No need to apologise Jane. Sorry to be a pain and know-it-all by
saying it's a mute point ... daylight savings, time zone differences
etc. should make bugger-all difference to the arrival of mail with
reference to your local time.

What happens is that your mailer examines the mail header of incoming
mail, looks at the time stamp placed by the orginating mailer, then
works out where that is positioned with respect to other messages
(provided date/time sorting is used). Most mailers will take into
account any offsets present in orginiating time stamps.

The upshot of all this is that all persons sending mail should try and
ensure that their local clocks are set correctly. This being done, no
matter where you are on planet Earth, the same instant of time should
be the same everywhere e.g. let's take a hypothetical mail sent at
00UTC on 7 December, 1998...

199812070000UTC = 00:00 GMT on 7 Dec 1998 at Greenwich near London UK.
= 11:00 +1100 on 7 Dec 1998 in Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart.
= 10:00 +1000 on 7 Dec 1998 in Brisbane
= 08:00 +0800 on 7 Dec 1998 in Perth
= 16:00 -0800 on 6 Dec 1998 in Los Angeles, California USA

Every time in the above list is the same instant with local
representations included simply to indicate the local time of day. The
offset present is the offset from GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). Provided
you know where you are on Earth time-wise, you should be able to set
the local time offset correctly, Win95/98 provides a neat world map
GUI in the Control Panel to do this which should be OK provided you
base CMOS clock is OK.

There is only one gripe left with all of this. For some obscure
reason, Australia never seems to get its act into gear with respect to
proper and timely notification of daylight savings cut-over. This
makes it very hard for vendors who like to include such timely-info in
their Operating System (O/S) releases. So there is some risk that
actual daylight savings cutover times could differ from what your O/S
thinks it ought to be. That's just a pain since then you must set it
manually which in some cases requires rebooting to get back to the
BIOS-level.

I get around this problem by timing my UNIX computer with GMT and
syncing that off an NTP server in our intranet. This leaves all the
local time offsets up to the UNIX Windowing environment and
applications or the SunPC thingy that runs Win95. Incidently,
Win95/98/NT has a mind of its own when it comes to time so don't be
surprised if Bill's view of time differs from the computer's base
time. That's just life's pain with Bill's software:-)

As a last point, make sure your CMOS battery is OK since I've had
cases of machines left running for a couple of years, then turned-off
to change something like the time, then turned back on only to lose
all data about what disk it had, memory, BIOS version etc. We've
retired machines simply because their kind of battery isn't available
anymore!

I hope all this makes some sense:-)

Telstra's proxy, which ought to be one of the most reliable, claims
that the server doesn't have a DNS entry.

If one manages to get through, it could be working via a non-refreshed
DNS cache. The big-wide up-to-date internet world doesn't seem to know
this server's whereabouts:-(

A CYCLONE WARNING continues for coastal and island communities between Cape
Don and
Kalumburu in Western Australia, including Darwin. A CYCLONE WATCH extends
west
to Kuri Bay in Western Australia.

At 2 pm CST (12.30 pm WST) SEVERE TROPICAL CYCLONE Thelma was centred about
165 kilometres northwest of Darwin and 100 kilometres west of Snake Bay. The

Actually, given that the cyclone is only ~160km away, things are still
relatively peaceful in Darwin -- Wind 18 knots gusting 32, barometer
steady on 999hPa (has been for 3 hours) and heavy rain. The hourly obs
are available at http://tgsv7.nws.noaa.gov/weather/current/YPDN.html.

I am using IE 5 and it doesn't work for me either. From reading other
peoples replies, it seems to be working only on Netscape and that makes no
sense to me as I don't see how a different browser would make a difference

No, I think it is down to the DNS tables, as Michael pointed out:

>If one manages to get through, it could be working via a non-refreshed
>DNS cache. The big-wide up-to-date internet world doesn't seem to know
>this server's whereabouts:-(

I'm not too conversant with the workings of DNS, but as I understand
it, the tables (which convert the alpha URL you type in to its digital
form, e.g. 12.132.25.2) circulate around all net servers over a period
of time, with new additions and deletions gradually working their way
around the system.

In this case, it seems that the npmoc navy site is no longer found in
5 or 6 separate ISP's DNS tables, so either (a) the site has been
pulled off the net (unlikely), or (b) there is something funny with
the DNS tables which will hopefully be rectified when the next update
propagates to our ISPs.

I've just been reading more mail about this problem. Other than DNS,
as Laurier rightly points out, the host may have been removed from the
'net without warning (nasty). I can't check this out as I can't
"ping", "traceroute" or "nslookup" beyond our Telstra firewall:-(

The most common reason for the "IE can see it, NetScape can't" or
vice-versa is their respective management and use of both memory and
disk caches. Most of the time, a simple "refresh" or "reload" will
kick things along to the real status rather than simply recalling from
the cache(s). In one case, using NetScape V4.5, I found a site that I
knew had been refreshed. I hit which failed. I then dived
into the and reduced all caches to "0" then cleared them
and hit . That also failed so I quit Netscape altogether and
restarted it. That worked. This little story proves just how hard it
can be to get a true picture...

Thanks Michael. In the meantime, the offending site has come back on
air!

BTW, I'm not using Netscape or IE -- but Filedog, an auto download
program. (But I did check the US Navy site out using Netscape when I
found that Filedog wasn't downloading it.)

Just one more email about refreshing browsers: if you hold down 'shift'
while clicking reload in Netscape, it definitely does reload everything,
totally ignoring everything in cache, including prompting for passwords -
just try it!
