I think the Hunter Valley will be the go from about 3pm onwards, some light
rain near there now, will clear later. Note that the Bureau has wound back
Sydney and Illawarra chances to SLIGHT.

May ring around 11am - noon

up north.

Hi Jimmy , Gday Michael. Well I have just been for a drive, its darker
towards the west, but with this high cloud its hard to tell. There is a
little wind from the NE , temp is 24.7, humidity is 60%, barometer is 1022
and steady.

If you guys are going to the hunter, lets organise a quick meeting place and
I will be there.

Small cumulus have popped up to our west. Looks like there may be some
action in Sydney as well. However, I like the concept of the Central Coast.
We will see what happens.

Ok sounds good. Just went for a quick drive to have another look. High cloud
is moving fast, darker areas to w - Nw. Looks like some sort of rain line
may be approaching but dont know. Sun popped out now, but doesn't help.
Satpics are not really conclusive either.

I think this cloud mass is doing the perfect thing. Keeping the heat out for
now and then hopefully break it up allowing for explosive growth later. We
will see if the theory works.

Hi everyone,
Keep me informed. I won't be online all day but if there is a
potential near Sydney later I may be able to join the chase (perhaps if
Dave is thinking of heading out later on). Otherwise I'll keep watch here
in N. Ryde. - Tomorrow might be better around here - fortunately, I have
some spare time tomorrow afternoon so if there is something I'll be able
to have a look - I just wish there was a good hill around here where I
could also take shelter from lightning and rain.

Hello all,

Patrick from Canberra here. Unfortunately, it looks like another uneventful
day in this area (at least 6 weeks since last saw lightning).

A few scattered Cu developing but with very high bases and little
inclination for vertical development. The lack of moisture (Temp 20, DP of
8) and NW winds don't offer much prospect of any real improvement. The Wagga
sounding is the last hope when it becomes available...

Good luck to those heading north from Sydney!!

I understand your situation but it is early days yet as to what might
happen. I an trying to work out which way the cells will spread out and
which way they are moving.

We do not necessarily have to meet somewhere. In fact, if you have action in
your area or thereabouts, I would stay put so we can cover more storms.

Here in Melbourne the weather at the moment is confusing the living out of
me, in Melbourne there is a fresh northerly blowing and about 27, on the bay
and southern suburbs it's below 20 with a southerly.

The BOM just issued a amended forecast which says that a south westerly
change will move through in the late afternoon. They expect the winds on the
bay to swing to the north west in the afternoon, they still expect showers
and thunderstorms with the change, god knows, maybe something will happen.

Hi Paul,

The weather here in the Blue Mountains is fine with a temperature of about 28
degrees. There are some rather large cumulus cells developing to the west in the
general area of Katoomba.

Paul,

I can see very large cumulus to the N-NE on my horizon probably north of
Newcastle. There should be something in that general area. Unless something
dramatic happens, I think it is a bust. The cold front in Victoria may have
had an impact on the conditions. Although the general rule is that if
cumulus develop quickly and early, they won't do anything.

However Melbourne is looking ok - CAPE of 884 ( a little low) and BRN is
30.4, so they MAY get something, prob not severe though.

How do you obtain the soundings? Do you just get the data and plot it
yourself or do you have some way of obtaining plotted traces?

I worked for the BoM as a meteorologist in the Sydney office from 1986 till

Andrew
Next time you are in the city, pop into the Bureau of Met at 150 Lonsdale
Street. They have a library which is open to the public. Grab a book called
the "Short Term Forecasting Manual". It has a good practical explanation of
soundings and how they are used.

Mark, go to my homepage, and check the first item in the What's New
section -- it has all the info you need.

Here at Blackheath (15.00 EDST) it's 21C with a light W wind, and 3
octas flat Cu drifting across from the W -- nothing to excite.

I've just had a look at the latest model outputs, and they're looking
quite interesting for the next three days. AVN 98101718z run has a
nice large bulls-eye of rain in the NSW northern inland with a max of
18mm in the 6 hours to 12z tonight, then continues with varying
amounts of rain across SE Qld right through until Tuesday. NOGAPS
concurs, though it brings the rain a bit further south into NSW on
Monday. I haven't got rainfall output for the other models.

However, GASP, EC, AVN, yesterdays MRF and NOGAPS all bring a very
substantial airmass change into SA/Vic/Southern NSW during Monday,
with the 536 thickness pushing right up to the NSW/Vic border between
about 12z Monday and 00z Tuesday. EC (base 12z last night) has the 532
line across Kangaroo Is on Monday night. AVN (base 18z this morning)
puts 850 temps of -3 to -4 across Victoria during Monday night, and
the zero line well into northern NSW. This is consistent with
yesterday's 00z MRF, which pushed the 528 thickness up to about Albury
at 00z on Tuesday. Yesterday's MRF also had a large area of tot-tots
>55 for 00z tomorrow, amplifying N and E for Tuesday, with quite a few
splotches of >60 on the map.

Also interesting in the longer term is the MRF interpretation of the
scene after this next airmass change goes through. On its +144 hour
panels (Friday 00z), it deepens the Qld trough, and gives most of
inland Qld >30mm of rain for the 24 hours, with central areas getting
>80mm. This looks believable, given its treatment of the precipitable
water late in the week, with a pool of >60mm south of the Gulf of
Carpentaria. The MRF 10 day rain forecast is going for falls in excess
of 150mm in SE Qld for the period Thurs 29/10 to Tues 3/11.

So things could be getting interesting, folks!

Hi Nick

Sounds like a nice Bay seabreeze. I remember many years ago arriving
in Melbourne on the ferry from Tasmania. All across the Bay, and right
up to the time we pulled alongside the wharf, it was cold enough to
need a thick jumper when standing on deck. Then the northwesterly that
was blowing strengthened and blew out the area of cool air around us,
and I swear the temperature increased 15 degrees C almost instantly.

I've also experienced the dramatic temperature contrast across the
Bass Strait seabreeze front while riding a motorbike west along the
Great Ocean Road around Port Campbell. One moment, I'd be in a light
southerly, and shivering under leathers, jumper and t-shirt. Next, I'd
be in a fresh northerly, and sweating despite the airflow around me.
Then back in, and out... After a while I could visualise this massive
curtain of colder air on my left, hotter on my right, and me riding
through the folds in the curtain.

It would be fascinating to do a micro scale study of this -- or has it
already been done, especially as part of the various studies of the
Port Philip eddy?

Hi all,
Not a lot to report on the weather front here. A fine day with
cloudy periods and a moderate westerly however a significant cool change
overnight hopefully will bring some showers and this should extend towards
the eastern states. I was reading with interest Laurier Williams account of
variations in temperature in Melbourne and around the bay as well as along
the Great Ocean Road. Similar extremes in temperature can occur in Adelaide
compared with the south coast less than 50 miles away. This tends to occur
in Summer with an easterly breeze blowing overland to Adelaide giving
temperatures over 35C and cloudless skies, yet at the same time along the
South Coast eg Victor Harbor there is a breeze right off the ocean and the
temperature may be less than 20c and it may even be overcast with coastal
cloud.

Even though BoM is going for fine weather for Perth, there is still the
chance we could pick some thing up, scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms are forecast for the central and eastern parts of the SW land
division on Tuesday, Perth is expected to be still east of the trough, so
if we're lucky we may see something our self, but at this stage their seems
to be a good chance of at least some develepment to the north and east of
Perth over the rangers on Tuesday afternoon.

This from the Extended Period Forecast for the SW Land Division from BoM

During Tuesday, the west coast trough should deepen. East of the
trough, a combination of increasing mid level instability, and
increasing moisture extending south from the Gascoyne, should
result in the development of scattered showers and thunderstorms.

FORECASTS FOR THE SW LAND DIVISION:

Monday: On the south coast, drizzle areas contracting east.
Patchy rain developing in northern parts of the Central West
        District. Fine elsewhere.
Rising temperatures near the west coast.

Tuesday: Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms developing
         in central and eastern parts.

HI all! Just got back from chasing.......was going well. Got to bottom of
the Barrington tops (west of Gloucester, SW of Taree.) had some great
cumulus calvus, thought it was going to take off! Got caught in a heavy
shower, and then as I was trekking around the NE side of the cloud mass, a
hot northerly blew in, and the cloud dissolved right there (well almost!!)
and killed off any chance! Then with the northerly came the high cloud
again, and now its dull. Temp 23.4, humidity, 58%, wind Northerly 15 km/h,
barometer 1016 and falling. So heres hoping tomorrow maybe better. Also,
Jimmy, had a look at that satpic. Man, amazing! Wish that was happening

Hi everyone,
I noticed that this morning's Moree and Brisbane soundings seemed
to be largely contimated by the cloud in the region with DP's close to ELR
values and indications of a roughly "moist adiabatic" lapse. Williamtown
also seemed to show a similar trace above about 4000m with the DP close
the the ELR probably indicating the moisture associated with this
morning's cloudiness. On the other hand, Wagga seemed unaffected by cloud
and seemed to show significant mid-level dry air but only a shallow
subsidence inversion. Possibly temperatures in the high 20's could have
produced something here. A similar sort of trace was apparent for
Laverton (near Melbourne) showing significant mid-level dry air associated
with subsidence - possibly there was a layer of cloud near this level with
the DP close to the ELR near the inversion. Upper level winds didn't seem
to be terribly significant in the traces I looked at. Mount Gambier
showed the strongest upper level winds probably asssociated with the
advancing front. Perhaps we'll have more luck tomorrow in terms of storm
activity as the front approaches?

Hi all

Again extreme disappointment here with storm activity. At least it looks
like this area will get some pretty good rain from old storms. Early s'ly
change expected here on tuesday which really annoys. If the rain clears,
like its NOT forecast to tomorrow we could get something - but I don't think
it will.

Right now we've got a bar of 1014 or thereabouts, wind is calm and about
22C. We've had 3.2mm of wimpy rain but promise of mod-heavy falls soon with
a bit of thunder.

3 words: maybe next time

See ya

I drove up to Picton to get a little closer to the small Cu, it must of seen
me coming as it basically spreaded out to stratocumulus the minute I got
there. Was one small shower about 50kms further west, hoped it may have
pushed something along, it was just heralding the decay of the Cu in that
area. The Cu development shifted further southwards as the day wore on, but
always capped and well under control.

Jimmy ! hope you were not waiting around for me ? I rang and said I was
going up to Picton, hope I did not give the impression I was going to your
place. Would have missed nothing anyway. Have not a single thunder day in
Wollongong this season yet. I don't want to here those Melbourneites
complaining anymore.

Nothing beats the csiro pics although they have not been working since last
Friday. Try downloading any of the older ones. These are at 1km resolution.
Nothing compares with these in terms of detail.

I did not think you would have ventured passed that area. I was hoping
something might happen later at least to the N. Nothing at all.

Just shear utter frustration. I was wishing I was in swQLD Michael. Now
there is something building in WNSW.

Hi Andrew and everyone,

For a very basic and non-mathematical intro. you may also want to take a
look at an assignment I did on this subject for my meteorology course
earlier this year (although not perfect it may provide a basic intro. on
this subject. It provides some hypothetical Skew T diagrams to illustrate
the concepts. I might put together a page of real storm situation
soundings some day). I have put it at:

http://hardy.ocs.mq.edu.au/~m3052695/storm

Note that it may take some time to load.

Also, my definition of CAPE isn't complete: it fails to account for the
energy "hill" that has to be overcome before the level of free convection
can be reached. Let me know if you spot errors. There are some other
online documents that examine the topic in more detail but I can't find
the addresses offhand. Cheers,
	Paul.

Interestingly enough, I spoke to my grandparents again who have since heard
that some of their friends who live in Airey's Inlet had hail up to 60cm
deep on their balcony. I don't know how genuine this report is but
apparently there was still some hail left sitting there up to 24 hrs later
so I guess it must've been pretty deep. The hail also stripped
trees/plants of leaves due to it's size. Just thought you might like to
know that.
