Howdy all!! Things are looking good for Sunday, Monday & Tuesday!! Taree
current obs are warm, humid day, with heaps of towering cumulus and cumulus
congestus! West is looking good again! Last nights storm had a few
microbursts, with some rain ( we received 10mm total from last night &
heavey rain shower this morning). Some reports (Only local ones) of pea
sized hail, and some wind gusts. However, over the ocean , a great
lightning display for all!! Unfortunately, I was out , without my camera!!

Well, on such a quiet weather day, and after a very heavy and unexpected

11mm at Mt. Dandenong and 6mm at Scoresby in the hour or so to 1500.
Only 1mm in central Melbourne (the rain was very heavy here but only
lasted for a couple of minutes). A few spots of red (40mm+/hour)
showing up on the radar east of Melbourne. Still a bit of shower
activity around, but the serious stuff is through.

With Tuesday off you could head north til about Taree, I am sure that
something may be on there Tuesday still.

I will have to look if the Illawarra forecast has been updated to reflect
the better prognosis, I doubt it.....

Fresh NE seabreeze, 21.5C, 58%, 1018S.

Boring as all hell in other words.......

On the bright size my wife has finally relented to my pressure about moving

Just goes to show how things can catch you out. e-mailed Paul from Taree
and told nothing happening down here today and not much expected. Bom
forecast was for fine and mild chance of a late shower. Even at midday
today nothing much happening but showers and storms suddenly developed over
the metro area after 1pm. I was in the Dandenongs with a female friend. we
drove to the top of Mt Dandenong and watched as heavy showers with some cg
lightning and loud thunder rolled over. Just recently another storm moved
through the Ferntree Gully area with reports of heavy rain in the area.
still the prospect of some further activity over the next couple of hours.
2mm in the guage here at Kilsyth but I am sure other areas have had more.

Well what a surprise, didn't thing there would be anything today. During my
lunch break I went outside saw some nice Cu and thought 'this looks
promising', A couple of hours (3pm) later it was pouring and there were a
few nice loud bits of thunder.

It has cleared now but still looks pretty good, some Cu getting organised to
the west and I can see a rain curtain. It is very still, unlike in the
morning when there was a fresh north westerly, hopefully some action during
the night.

The radar shows a large band of rain (about 40-50km wide)
currently between Cape Otway and Geelong and moving NE -
a cell embedded in this has got pockets of 100mm/hr plus.
Aireys Inlet (which by my reckoning would be in the middle
of the band) has also dropped to 8.7 C, compared with 19.6
C at Geelong.

Also a smaller cell shown near Whittlesea - unfortunately
there's a tall building in the way in that direction so I
can't get a sighter on the cloud.

Also unfortunately, the Mt. Dandenong rain display has
gone on the blink. Scoresby's up to 10mm - obviously the
second storm hit them as well as the first.

severe, storms happening.

Radio reports (1710) of large hail and 50+ knot winds near Aireys
Inlet. A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued. The warning
says it's moving E-SE, but that doesn't match what the radar is
showing - it looks more ENE. This track would see it miss Melbourne
but possibly affect the far southern suburbs.

There's a bit about in the way of showers but just the one isolated
and small cell south of Melton. The cell which hit Aireys Inlet is
now over the Mornington Peninsula, but seems to be breaking up.
Also quite a bit of action in the Sale area.

Infuriatingly, Aireys Inlet has gone off the air. Highest rainfall
I've seen so far is 16mm at East Sale, but I wouldn't be surprised
if we see a few 20s and 30s.

My gut feeling (I'm not a forecaster, so don't take this as gospel)
is that the activity might have peaked.

There is a small but intense cell in the bay just south of the
city - looks like it is about to come ashore in the Elwood/Brighton
area.

Beyond that there is a marked clearance to the west - clear skies
visible and nothing on the radar. I'd say this is the final fling.

(This will be my last update for tonight - as soon as things clear
up enough for me to ride home without getting soaked I'm on my way).

I am new to the list. I have been
reading with interest about this afternoon's storms in Melbourne. Not much
to report here today. Some early high cloud. There were some distant cumulus
clouds to the east obviously heading to Melbourne. By sunset not a cloud in

I would write Saturday off completely for Sydney - Illawarra. The strato
cumulus and orographic stratus suddenly thickened over the Illawarra
escarpment this afternoon around 3pm, and had some healthier Cu embedding in
it which gave a light shower in some places. Nothing thundery, no even
close, but potential none the less.

It could point to better chances for a storm tomorrow afternoon than I had
thought, especially given what happened in Victoria this afternoon.

At present ( 11pm ) Radar shows a line of weakening thunderstorms near
Orbost, I doubt it will make it around the corner into NSW proper, but the
far south coast ( Eden ) may see something in a few hours if it does
survive.
