Rain and storms Sydney October 2009

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

Finally some significant rainfall across the Sydney region and south along the coast. Some heavy falls occurred in the parched South Coast where water restrictions are about to be issued.

The rain began overnight Friday as thunderstorms streamed in from the northwest. Some hailstorms amongst the many cells that developed and rapidly drifted towards the coast. Most of the more consistent rainfall however occurred on 3rd October. Models seem to indicate a wet pattern and relatively cooler weather at least for the first part of October.

Meanwhile, in contrast, bushfires and heat waves conditions persist in Queensland and parts of northern NSW.

Cold Frost and Showers – Storms Europe / Colorado

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

After some frost eariler in the week, it seems the rain pattern has set back in along the coastal region. Quite cool too. The frost was a little more severe than what you would expect for early June. Great snowfalls thus far in NSW and Victoria.

Meanwhile, the season in tornado alley has really begun to fire from a hailstone perspective with some giant hailstones being reported particularly in some serious supercells in Colorado. The high county in that region really produces some nice supercells and is renound for some serious hailstorms particularly during the latter part of the tornado season. Colorado has also reported some decent tornadoes as well.

Nevertheless, the season has been particularly bad with much less tornadoes reported compared to what is anticipated at this time of the year – apparently the worst since 1996.

Europe has had an incredible number of storms and tornadoes reported from France Germany, Hungary and even Russia! The footage from Hungary trashing the roof is some fo the best I have ever seen on video!

Hailstorms fires and floods across eastern Australia

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

Michael,

As the title says, I am astounded that we have lost whole towns and literally hundreds of homes in this disaster! hailstone from hailstorm at Dora Creek from February 10 2009I am shell shocked – and there seems to be more bad news on the way. I have heard information that suggests the toll could top 300 with another town just being discovered. At this time, the toll stands at 181 dead and many injured. A scene of chaos people attempting to escape the inferno. I have never seen a pyrocumulonimbus as massive as this one above the fire plumes on this devastating day.

Amongst all of this confusion, there are floods and disaster in far north Queensland in Ingham who is expecting a third flood peak, and then I got the hailstorm yesterday thanks to you and your quick thinking! I tell you I had to turn around very quickly to do this and that is what allowed me to get the hailstorm. Here is a couple of images of the hailstones:
