No rain, bushfires, storms

Monday, September 7th, 2009

Jimmy the dry weather has persisted with just 0.9mm of rainfall during August. The last decent rainfall was at the beginning of July which has meant two months with no rain – and the need to buy water to top up the household water tanks.

We had a few hot days after returning from the ASWA conference – the afternoon we returned was the worst with 36. Lots of records were set that day.

The following weekend 29-31 August, Alison, her mum and I drove to Newcastle for a family wedding. Strong winds got quite severe on the Saturday evening as a cold front pushed through. The next day there was a large bushfire in the Nelson Bay area – this was taken from the cliffs around Newcastle:

The past week was fairly quiet weatherwise though an isolated severe storm did develop south of Grafton on Saturday. I was able to see some of it from Ballina.

Cold Snowy and Windy for Southeast Australia

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Finally a sigficant cold front for SE Australia after a few weeks of action focusing on Southwest West Australia.

The change should see widespread snowfalls to the Alpine areas – the ski resorts have certainly been waiting for this!.

GFS tips a low off the NSW south coast which may shoot a cold pool up the ranges. We could see some decent snowfalls across the Central and possibly Northern Tablelands.

Besides the snow and rain chances, gales and severe weather warnings are featuring in SA, NSW and VIC already.

Storms and rain over southeast Australia

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

Hi Jimmy – good to see some more solid follow up rain over many parts of Victoria. A strong cold front and pre-frontal trough have led to widespread storms today with some reports of hail over inland NSW too.

This system should deliver more storms over parts of NSW – and hopefully around here – Sunday to Tuesday as the trough stalls.

We ended up with about 30mm of rain as a result of Tropical Cyclone Hamish and a high pressure system directing an onshore flow for a couple of days this week. Certainly could have been a lot wetter with major flooding. The major impact from Hamish appears to have been the bulk carrier which was damaged and has led to a major oil spill over the Southeast Queensland coastline.
