Lightning briefly and record temperatures

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

Michael,

Record temperatures are likely over eastern Australia which gives rise to the real possibility of early heat this year as has occurred in 1995 and other times in the past.

Rainfall wise though – we have only had 3.4mm in the storm last week with a little lightning thrown in!

Winter Storms and Australian Severe Weather Association conference

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

It has not rained here for about 4 weeks now which is not all that unusual for this time of year, but still … could do with some rain.

Thunderstorms are active across NSW this morning and should continue over wide areas. Wednesday looks more interesting for NE NSW and SE QLD though the big variable is the amount of cloud cover.

The Australian Severe Weather Association conference kicks off next Friday in Melbourne. Be great to catch up with everyone including you Jimmy! The Dunoon tornado presentation should make a good impression on the audience.

Dry Weather and El Nino

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

It seems like the indicators such as the Southern Oscillation Index has drought conditions worsening in Victoria and southern NSW. This is absolutely astonishing considering the type of summer Victoria had to contend with. Dry conditions continuing can only increase the likelihood of more potent bush fire weather in these regions.

Here it also continues rather cool and dry though frosts have not been as severe as other years. And it seems that the next couple of days may see increasing temperaturesAdelaide has a forecast temperature of 23C – rather unusual for this time of the year. Will be interesting to see if there is a rapid increase in temperature across central Australia and if this is periodically advected down to the southern parts towards the latter part of winter and early spring.
