Philippine Thunderstorms

The Philippine trip this time around has been far more interesting than the past.

First and foremost, I left Sydney with thunderstorms that were almost severe and then arrived at Davao City with a thunderstorm looming nearby as we descended. Left Sydney 6th October 2009 and arrived 7th October 2009.

October 11 2009  Davao City lightning

The next real thunderstorms to occur produced night time lightning with a few hidden bolts and also some zits (lightning between updrafts and anvil) as well as weak anvil crawlers. The storm was initially reasonably structured for the tropics.





Later that evening lightning to the general south.

October 12 2009  Davao City lightning

By far the best thunderstorms I have ever seen in Davao City in 3 trips here. This storm complex was organised along a boundary and although slow moving was able to tap into the warm moist layer and produce some strong bolts at times! I was able to photograph a few of these.  Missed a couple of very hot bolts including some staccato behaviour. Great to watch however!



 This bolt pulsed so long 1.5 second - that my movement was able to obtain a second pulse in the same photograph.

Take heart that you went to a location that had storms also!  Some ripper bolts there - obscured by cloud but very strong!  Is that photo a double strike or the vibration from your excitement? !

Nice photos there Jimmy esp Oct 12. It's not all bad in the tropics Wink I can see someone investing in a 'winter retreat' there in the future!

How does that occur when taking the photo,  only the bolt duplicates itself in the photo while everything else remains in singular formation. (Is it from slight movement of the hand with a slow shutter speed?)
 Just amazing how it has captured it, or is it in fact an identical strike, if so I have never seen that before.
