A tornado in China tore up 650 houses in just five minutes and damaged nearly 1,000, state media said on Sunday, but only one person died.

The tornado touched down in the eastern province of Anhui Saturday, causing 18.5 million yuan ($A2.8 million) in losses.

Forty-five people, including eight seriously wounded, were taken to hospital after the tornado hit in Lingbi county, Xinhua news agency said.

One 76-year-old villager died on the way to hospital.

More than 20,000 people were "affected" by the tornado and 950 were relocated, Xinhua said.

Found another story from a couple of weeks ago. From the sounds of it may have been a different tornado in the same area....

HEFEI, July 10 (Xinhuanet) -- The impact of the natural disasters plaguing east China's Anhui Province, which has been hit by floods and tornadoes in the past few days, will worsen in the next week, the provincial government said Thursday.

The provincial meteorological station forecast continued rain along the Huaihe and Yangtze rivers until July 14.

Rainstorms pounded the areas along the two rivers Tuesday and Wednesday. The relentless rainfall has caused heavier floods, damaging more crops and houses and causing more residents to be evacuated, the government source said.

The downpour also resulted in landslides in several counties and raised the water level of reservoirs.

The province was also hit by strong tornadoes Tuesday and Wednesday. In Lujiang County, a tornado tore down 4,789 houses andbuildings and destroyed 32,648 hectares of crops Tuesday. About 2,106 people had been evacuated from their houses by Thursday.
