Cold in China - January 2008

Well it is winter, however even by China's standards there is a decent cold snap ongoing. Just spoke with a friend who is currently living in Guangzhou and maxima there have generally been below 8C and as low as 5C over the last few days (prior to that it was unseasonably warm!). http://weather.news.sina.com.cn/ or of course weather underground. Note that Guangzhou is at 23N and enjoys the same warm season mugginess as Hong Kong  -- gotta love those continental effects :)

Across Gansu province, where my colleague's wife currently is (complaining :) ) there have been days of sub -20C.

Into the real cold country (eg 'Inner Mongolia') and it is has been consistently below -20C and down to almost -40C:
