22nd December 2009 Singleton to Gunnedah chase

We awoke to observe stripped leaves and some damage in Singleton after the previous day's savage supercell. There were evn reports of broken windows and dents to cards were extensive though they were not demolished.





I really saw no reasons to be anywhere else on this day as we had slept the night in Singleton after the Putty Road ordeal and the models and conditions really did no single out any other locations. I did not even panic really when Michael indicated warnings in effect further south.





The earlier activity was certainly more intense nearer Sydney although I saw weaker cells probably located in the Nullo Mountain vicinity seemed to be persisting. One cell practicly hardly moved even up to about 2 to 3pm period. Anvils initially were weak.




Imelda, Kimberly, Jimelle and I decided to head closer to Bulga to be out of the heat and under the gradually growing anvil. It was during this phase that the cell began to intensify. Repositioning towards the Golden Highway showed a better perspective of the crisp anvil. The storm began to show inflow







Low behold, a barrel updraft with large base I was able to timelapse for a short period of time:





After this shot, the next opportunity showed the storm slowly in decline:

It just got more contrast magic, and the lightning in this copmplex was very frequent:



On the flat plains south of Mullaley, the storm lost strength and stalled, revleaing more intense and pulsating lightning bolts:









The anvil crawlers were quite impressive and obviously almost impossible to fit on camera from this close:







It turned out to be worth the drive in the end when we were destined for home after the barrel updraft storm event.

Breathtaking photos and report there Jimmy, excellent structure and lightning images,  Our trip to tamworth to see the folks had a storm thrown
in on the 21st on arrival in town with a nice downbust to the north which eventually joined the main squall line that brought over 50 mm to the area,





Another storm cell to the north of Tamworth that became visible after the squall line had passed through,
