Pea size hail here at Bracken Ridge with the larger size measuring 2.3 cm,(measured and photoed), good CGS, a few ICS and rain.
Temps dropped from 32C to 22C (10C ) very quickly.

Nice short storm.

Cheers

Just had pea sized hail at Maroochydore with severe down-bursts. Hail was bouncing off the west-facing windows and I recall seeing twigs and leaves being whipped up about 30 seconds before everything went white! Adrenaline was pumping I must tell you.

I saw it all coming as I was heading home earlier, looking rather ominous. The illumination of the sunlight behind the storm was spectacular, but of course I missed the opportunity of grabbing a pic or two.

Typical. Have driven up to Brisbane over the weekend for work and about the time the above warning was issued would have been just east of Warwick so about 2 hours behind all the action. Did notice the towers of what was probably the cell near Logan off to the east as I was heading for Cunninghams Gap.

Sorry guys, I have brought the digital camera which should guarantee you a reprieve from the storms until the end of the week! Unless they happen while I am stuck on the site and can't take photos.

How embarrassing BoM! Just a typo. Hehe

I am disappointed from yesterday where the trough coming in too quickly to kill off chances. Byron Bay to Tweed area copped the best. I dont see anything will happen today only i can see some cu towers inland.

Well the thunderstorms in the Gympie area sure have pulled their act together there is now a detailed severe storm warning. Below I have an image of the lightning strikes there over the past hour you can see the path it is taking by how the lightning is all behind it. As for our region cumulus and 1 cumulonimbus are developing in the area the best one at the moment on MB webcam north view. Weatherzone forecasts isolated showers with possible afternoon thunder.

paul very nice pictures.

We had a blackout last night but I'm not sure if it is related to the previous evening's storms. Maybe a tree branch snapped and fell on some power lines, it can happen mind you, the wind was ferocious as the gustfront moved over.

I had an appointment at Lawnton today,( North of Brisbane City)  and so  therefore on the way home I was able to  travel  through Murrumba Downs and survey some of the damage from yesterdays storm. There seemed to be a narrow corridor from Petrie through to the Redcliffe Peninsular where the winds from the front caused trees to snap and  to be uprooted. Large construction fences  and billboards were also toppled. The news reports also indicated that there was some significant damage to a few houses on the  Southside of Brisbane as well.

Unfortunately I was unable to stop and photograph the area but I would expect the local paper will have some coverage of the damage, if so I will post some of the reports.

It was very typical of the afternoon storms that hit Brisbane and that  I have experienced  since living here for the last 43 years.

Quite interesting at the moment. The air mass is still unstable behind the trough today as the change comes through this morning. Air is still warm and humid with winds from S to Se (SW inland). Few largeish cells firing up inland moving eastwards. No surprise for large hail out of those cells today!

Storm warning in place once again for the SEQ. Raining pretty heavy at Bracken Ridge and a good cell just west of Somerset is trying to make its way East , if it succeeds, I should be in the firing line of the storm.

BOM

For people in parts of the
SOUTH BURNETT and
TOOWOOMBA Council Areas.

Issued at 12:48 pm Wednesday, 2 December 2009.

Thunderstorms are moving towards the east. They are forecast to affect Cooyar by 1:25 pm and the area north of Crows Nest by 1:55 pm.

Damaging winds and large hailstones are likely.

Have been in Brisbane myself since Sunday, but most of the storm action since I arrived has been to the north (a fair way). Unusually this morning a band of storms was heading towards Brisbane early from the west but petered out, however when I went out for lunch at about 1pm at South Brisbane it was raining fairly heavily.

The news tonight reported on some serious damage out the back of Sunshine Coast/Gympie - and that storm did look nasty on radar yesterday afternoon - but again seems to have been fairly localised though in a regional area, possibly just some downbursts causing localised wind damage.
