Static discharges from your umbrella?  That's amazing.  You sure you weren't in the line of fire for a step-leader!  I'd like to hear more on that if you would not mind Shaun, that's pretty interesting and from anyone else who has experienced this - so much so I've posted a new thread in the general discussion area to continue this topic.

Fantasic photo Shaun. We had nothing in Narrabri, but I was certainly wishing I was up around Dirranbandi/Mungindi to watch the big left-mover that was visible on the RADAR.

Hi all, been a while since I got online.  I had a look at Michael's webcams and noticed an interesting visitor in one frame.  I apologise if it's been mentioned already as I havent got time to scan the threads to check, but have a look at the first cam and pause it at 3.27 - I assume its a kite or hang-glider but who knows!!!??? :)

Hello Brad,

It looks like a kite to me!  There's nobody hanging underneath for it to be a hang glider. There is no fuselage so it isn't an aircraft (besides it is too close and low). ...and it definitely is not a UFO, just an ordinary terrestrial kite!

Regards,

Geoff

Hi all!!!

What an event, and so many awesome photos by everyone!!! I chased NE NSW on the Monday but had to head home Tuesday due to work and missed that Lismore ripper unfortunately. However I got a nice supercell at Glen Innes that had a wall cloud with some rotation, along with 5cm hail along the way. Along with this was 5 other storms!!! Anyway I will have a report up for this shortly.. till then heres a few piccies.

Hi Ben,
Great shots! That last shot of the RFB is stunning, don't get to see those everyday, thats for sure! It looked like a pretty nice cell on the radar images.

I'm eager to read your chase report! :)
Cheers.

Hi,

Here is a You Tube video of the 9th October storm (taken from Tyagarah north of Byron Bay):

I was overseas during this period in the Philippines watching boring vertical convection haha

Welcome back JD, could you send some of that boring vertical convection to your NW thanks?  :)  NSW and QLD certainly have seen some fantastic supercells cause significant havoc around the areas.  You've gotta love those troughs that push through!

Some more photos from the Lismore Hailstorm on 9th October 2007

The first photos are by Jason of South Lismore (forum member Pato) - who also copped some large hailstones the day before - see earlier in this thread. He had 10 windows smashed by the hail, and even paint chipped off freshly painted exterior surfaces.

Was there any rotation with that supercell Ben as depicted in your last photo?  Looks like there is from the centre of the cloud base no?

saw a beautiful storm on the way to Boondall will post my vids of the lightning as soon as i can! the videos are of the storm just as we were crossing the gateway bridge such an awesome view of the storm! By the time we got to Boondall the storm was close by and had awesome crawlers and cg's but the rain and concert times prevented me from getting any pics at all, just the 2 video's. It must have looked funny to see me hanging out the car window with a camera filming n the gateway lol

Sorry for the lateness of my post but here is the vid i said i would try to get on here of the storm that hit just near Boondall.

(There is a very nice crawler right near the end of the clip) Sorry if the quality isn't all that great the vid was shot using a digital camera, not a vid camera so it gets grainy when it is viewed zoomed in. Enjoy.

Karina

Hi,

I particularly like the one very nice anvil crawler in that clip nearing the end. Great stuff - good anvil crawlers in Australia are not particularly common.

Thanks Jimmy,
The particular storm i filmed hit right near Boondall (it was good timing it hit just as we pulled into the carpark at the bris entertainment centre) This storm was producing alot of anvil crawlers the majority being alot bigger than the one at the end of the vid clip. I couldnt get any film of them though unfortunantly as i wasn't allowed to take my camera in with me and due to the rain i wasnt about to stand in a deluge to get pics lol i noticed that while in the car filming the lightning appeared orange and pink but when the storm actually hit the lightning was a purple/blue colour, any particular reason as to why the colours seem to change? My apologies if it seems like a silly question but being a newbie to all of this the only way to get answers is to ask questions.

cheers Karina

Karina,

Distant lightning is often orangey and reddish in colour perhaps due to the haze and dust that can be kicked up at that time of the year. The city lights reflecting on the cloud bases can also impact colouration.

Overhead, you are looking through a different atmosphere so differeing wavelengths filter through. This is just a basic way of looking at it but if there are other more technically minded people with some better explanations I would certainly like your thoughts posted here.

Hi guys,

Was just browsing around on the internet and came across this particular image. Does it look familiar to anyone who chased on the 8th October 2007?

Goolmangar, surounded by storms.
