NSW / SE QLD Coastal Showers / Rain : 17 - 23 June 2009
« on: 18 June 2009, 01:11:39 AM »
Reading through 9msn, and weatherzone has forecasted heavy rain to fall over parts of NSW over the next few days. the article states:

Weatherzone says over 50mm of rain is expected between Coffs Harbour and Sydney, with isolated falls over 100mm possible.

"The rain is being caused by easterly winds feeding in moisture from the Tasman Sea onto the NSW coast and ranges," Weatherzone meteorologist Matt Pearce said.

"Cold air in the upper atmosphere will assist in the development of heavy falls."

Mr Pearce said showers would not fall west of the Great Dividing Range, missing areas in desperate need of rain.

The rain was unlikely to cause flooding or damage at this stage, he said.

"However, with these set-ups, often all it takes is the development of a small-scale low pressure system to cause a localised period of torrential rain, which can trigger flash flooding with little warning."

Mr Pearce said much of the rain was predicted to fall south of the mid-north coast, which was recently hit by floods.

The wet weather is forecast to clear from the coast from Saturday, before possible falls next week.

Wauchope west of Port Macquarie has topped the 24 hours totals with just over 100mm. Many coastal locations from Forster to Grafton have received between 50 and 100mm.

I've measured 9mm to 9am yesterday and 10mm to 9am today (19th June).

Sydney rainfall - Week ending 20/6/2009

Cumulative rainfall totals for the 7 day period around Sydney vary significantly. From 9 am 14 June 2009 to 9 am 20 June 2009, some rainfall totals include:

Highest totals:

Newport 65 mm, Sydney (Observatory Hill 63 mm), Avalon 62 mm, Cronulla 59 mm, Randwick 57 mm, Long Reef 50 mm, Turramurra 43 mm, Castle Cove 37 mm, Gordon West 34 mm, Canterbury 28 mm and Bankstown 27 mm.

Lowest totals

Much lighter totals have occurred in Sydney's west. Much of the shower activity has not penetrated too far west and the bigger totals are limited towards the coastal strip of the city.

Propsect Dam 16 mm, Liverpool 11 mm, Seven Hills 10 mm, Horsley Park 9 mm, Kings Langley 8 mm, Richmond 6 mm, Badgerys Creek 5 mm, Holsworthy AWS 4 mm, Penrith 4 mm and Warragamba Dam 2 mm.

(Source BOM - 7 day rainfall totals to 9 am 20/6/2009).

On Thursday 18 June 09, it was interesting to watch cold weather coastal cumulonimbus clouds move inland across the Sydney Basin. They were slow moving and many of the shower cells weakened prior to reaching western areas of Sydney. Most of the showers did not penetrate further west than Auburn or the Parramatta region until near sunset.

Saturday morning 20/6/09 has seen further shower activity across a large portion of Sydney with 3.5 mm falling at Blacktown where I live from 9 am to 11 am. That takes the figure to 14 mm to date at Blacktown from this weather event.

Coffs Harbour

A small area around Bellingen and Coffs Harbour has again scored 100 mm rainfall totals from 9 am 19/6/09 to 9 am 20/6/09 such as:-

Bellingen Crystal Creek (Weather Station 59078) - 112 mm.
Red Hill (Weather Station 559016) - 107 mm.
Thora Post Office (Weather Station 59033) - 102 mm.

Other big falls around the Coffs Harbour region include Wooli (Browns Knob) 99 mm, Dorrigo Alert 90 mm, Shephers Lane 84 mm and Perry Drive 78 mm. There are numerous rain gauges in the area that have recorded between 50 and 80 mm of rain during the 24 hour period.

Thanks for the comprehensive rainfall summaries in this and other threads Harley - they are great.

I've topped 100mm for the event with 48mm to 9am this morning (21st). That seems to be the highest fall in the Northern Rivers district based on the flood warning pages. Plenty of locations had 25 to 40mm in the past 24 hours.

Rainfall for Sydney 20 and 21 June 2009

Substantial fog across large areas of Western Sydney occurred Sunday morning 21/6/09 which cleared mid to late morning only to reveal cloudy conditions. Further light showers occurred during the afternoon around Western Sydney and up until 4 pm 21/6/09 many rain gauges have registered between 0.5 and 2 mm of rain.

Being the day with the shortest amount of daylight hours (Winter Solstice) Sunday turned out to be a cool dull day with the occasional afternoon shower.

From 9 am 20/6/09 to 9 am 21/6/09, more substantial showers occurred across some areas of Sydney. The highest totals include:-

Sydney (Observatory Hill) 32 mm, North Manly 34 mm, Allambie 30 mm, Randwick 26 mm and Cromer 25 mm.

The heaviest totals were confined to the coastal suburbs and significantly lighter falls fell west of Parramatta. The lowest totals were:-

Glenorie 3 mm, Box Hill 2 mm, Badgerys Creek 1.4 mm, Penrith 1.2 mm and Richmond 0.4 mm.

In the same period, 6 mm fell at Seven Hills and Blacktown where I live.

North Coast of New South Wales 20/6/09 to 21/6/09:

The showers are still confined to the coast. The highest total occurred at Mt Seaview with 61 mm. The other highest totals include Bellingen 42 mm, Old Bar 40 mm, Bowra Sugarloaf 39 mm, Cooks Creek 38 mm, Gleniffer 36 mm, Lake Cathie 31 mm and Tuncurry Wind 30 mm.

On the Far North Coast, Goonengerry recorded 44 mm being the highest total. There were numerous centres recording 26 to 40 mm in this area.

(All figures courtesy of the Bureau of Meteorology Weather Station sites - 21/6/2009).

Cumulative totals 14 to 21 June 2009

The rainfall plot for New South Wales produced at http://www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/silo/rain_maps.cgi in "Water and the Land "Bureau of Meteorology" shows the nature of the rainfall. Much of the rainfall is limited to the New South Wales coastal strip particularly north from Nowra (New South Wales South Coast). Heavier totals have occurred on the coastal strip north from Sydney.

Falls of between 50 and 100 mm have occurred on the coastal strip north from Sydney. An area near Coffs Harbour has received between 150 and 200 mm. A large area of the coastal strip on the North Coast has received between 100 and 150 mm of rain.

Hence for some localities on the New South Wales North Coast, this has been another reasonably wet period.

I might just add that in the last hour or so, there have been thunderstorms occuring in Southern NSW and NE VIC - with good falls from a developing though. Rutherglen in NE VIC has picked up 19mm in last 90 mins.

Keeping a track to see if the storms will reach southern VIC.

Southern NSW thunderstorms

Following on from Big Petes earlier post, a line of thunderstorms have recently developed across southern New South Wales and North East Victoria. The thunderstorms are moving south east and as at 5.40 pm they stretched north from Mansfield then north towards Wagga Wagga.

Rainfall totals as at 5.40 pm included 18.4 mm at Rutherglen but the system was still passing over and 13 mm at Wangaratta. The system is producing good rainfalls and some cells contain heavy rainfall and a reasonable amount of lightning. As at 5.40 pm, the system was passing over Albury - Wodonga producing substantial shower activity in the region.

Hi guys,
I was keeping an eye on that nice storm front earlier, seemed to be fairly organized as it approached the Wagga/Albury region. Has died off somewhat now but a few cells remain active now in the central west area currently. Looks like some nice forward shearing taking place on the satellite images.

Good to see something happening lightning-wise this time of year!

Kindest regards,
Shauno

Minor flood warnings began for the Orara and Bellinger rivers last night with the continuing rain.

Some moderate to heavy falls have occurred over SE QLD and NE NSW in the past 24 hours. Upper Springbrook on the QLD/NSW border tops the list with 154mm to 7am. A few sites in the Northern Rivers have topped the 100mm mark including Ballina and Evans Head.

There was some particularly heavy rain in the headwaters of the Wilsons River early evening (21st) which has resulted in the river passing the 7 metre mark at Eltham this morning. This is actually quite significant and would normally result in a flood warning for Lismore but rainfalls elsewhere in the catchment have been a lot lower. Regardless there IS a flood along the Wilsons River and some roads are cut upstream from Lismore.

A very warm humid night in Brisbane last night with a min. of 17.5C (21/06/09), especially for this time of year. We are in for another wet day today. Brisbane has recieved some good falls through out the area. Michael Bath has noted  the rain totals just  North of the boarder.

Brisbane and North of Brisbane:

Upper Caboolture AL *           78 mm
Morayfield AL *                         63 mm
Round Mt Reservoir AL *           83 mm
Beerburrum AWS *                     71 mm
Dayboro AL *                         65 mm

There has been good falls from 10mm through to 154mm throughout SEQ. Harley Pearman will probably have a excellent summary of all the rain totals.

Cheers

The rainfall across the South East of QLD over the past 48 hours has caused some streams to rise quickly resulting in some minor flooding to occur during Monday the 22/06/09.

There is still heavy rainfall predicted for coastal and inland areas during this evening and overnight, which is likely to cause levels to rise, which could result in minor to moderate flooding.

While out driving this afternoon, many of the flood prone areas are very close to breaking their levies. Some roads are already closed. One such road closure is that of Young’s Crossing road at Warner which is once again cut off due to flooding and also the release of water from the North Pine Dam.

BOM has stated that minor flooding is occurring on the Sunshine Coast on the Mooloolah and Maroochy rivers. Minor flooding is occurring on the upper Logan River at Rathdowney and on the lower Logan River in Slacks Creek.

BOM has advised;
{[“Residents in low lying areas should continue to monitor rising water levels
closely.
Motorists are warned not to attempt to drive through flood water on roads, especially at night.”
Latest Rainfall:
Rainfall recorded across South East Queensland during the past 48 hours to 3pm
Monday has generally been between 40mm to 80mm, with some higher totals recorded
on the Sunshine Coast at Dunethin Rock 100mm, Ewen Maddock Dam 174mm,
Diddillibah 134mm, and Round Mountain 96mm, and across the Gold Coast hinterland
and Logan-Albert catchments with Upper Springbrook 211mm, Mt Tamborine 132mm,
and Mt Nimmel 162mm.}]
