Yes, I see exactly what you mean now Mike with regards to your image and the region the lightning appears to be from the lower regions.
I was sure that the lightning flash in my images were only striking the same area, not exactly the same spot, mostly because i changed my position by a few meteres and the perspective changed, it only looks like it was striking the same spot.
