Just a quick update with the latest tropical cyclones and tropical low of QLD, WA and Vanuatu affecting Norfolk Island.



TC Vince WA :

TROPICAL CYCLONE INFORMATION BULLETIN
Issued at 8:44 am WST on Friday 14 January 2011
BY THE BUREAU OF METEOROLOGY
TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING CENTRE PERTH

Tropical Cyclone Vince (Category 1) was located at 8 am WST near 16.3S 112.5E,
that is 650 km north northwest of Exmouth and moving east southeast at 17
kilometres per hour.
Tropical Cyclone Vince (Category 1) is not expected to significantly intensify
as it moves towards the east-southeast during Friday. It is then expected to
curve around and weaken as it moves back towards the west.

GALE WARNING FOR NORTH EASTERN AREA

SITUATION
At 0000 UTC a Tropical Low was centred within 30 nautical miles of
 latitude twelve decimal five south (12.5S)
 longitude one hundred and fifty decimal seven east (150.7E)
Recent movement : east at 8 knots
Maximum winds   : 30 knots
Central pressure: 995 hPa
The low is expected to move southeast and develop into a tropical cyclone in
the next 12 hours.

Forecast positions
At 1200 UTC 14 January: Within 120 nautical miles of 13.4 south 151.6 east
                        Central pressure 993 hPa.
                        Winds to 35 knots near centre.
At 0000 UTC 15 January: Within 150 nautical miles of 14.7 south 152.2 east
                        Central pressure 987 hPa.
                        Winds to 45 knots near centre.

A CYCLONE WARNING IS IN FORCE FOR NORFOLK ISLAND
 
TROPICAL CYCLONE VANIA WAS CENTRED NEAR 21.6S 167.4E (NEAR EASTERN NEW CALEDONIA, OR 440 NAUTICAL MILES NORTH OF NORFOLK ISLAND) AT 1130 NFT on 14-January-2011.
 
The cyclone is moving south-southwest at 5 knots, and is expected to continue moving southwards over the next few days.  If this forecast movement is maintained, the cyclone may lie near Norfolk Island late Sunday.
 
FORECAST UNTIL MIDNIGHT SUNDAY
 
Easterly winds are expected to rise to gale force on Saturday morning with average speeds of 35 knots gusting 50 knots at times through the day.
Seas becoming very rough with combined sea and northeasterly swell rising to 4 to 5 metres.
 
On Saturday night or Sunday, easterly winds may continue to strengthen to near storm force, with seas becoming high and northeasterly swells rising to 5 to 6 metres (or possibly higher).
Heavy rain is also possible.

We just have to keep an eye on the situation. It is early days and there is no real certainty at the time of posting this, of what will happen.

Update from Tropical low 1 now Tropical cyclone Zelia

TROPICAL CYCLONE INFORMATION BULLETIN
For 1:45 pm EST on Friday 14 January 2011
At 1 pm EST Friday, Tropical Cyclone Zelia (Category 1) with central pressure
992 hPa was located
over the Coral Sea
near latitude 12.5 south longitude 151.3 east, which is about 770 km northeast
of Cairns and 445 km north northeast of Willis Is.

The cyclone is moving east at about 14 kilometres per hour and should gradually
intensify over the next 24 hours.

 Tropical Cyclone Zelia is currently moving east away from the Australian
coast. It will start to move south-eastward and continue to intensify through
the next 24 to 48 hours. It will have no impact upon Australia.

I was quite surprised to see two including Zelia as the 2nd both track fairly similar paths down the east coast and near Norfolk Island. Got to be unusual having two following that close.

What was the go with two TCs being named at a similar time both starting with the letter V ?   I thought there was supposed to be a consistent set of names for the southern hemisphere by now.
