Localized tornado outbreak possible in southeast SD today!

A mid-level shortwave trough is ejecting out of southern Montana right now; later this afternoon, a strong surface low is expected to develop over south-central South Dakota, bringing plenty of wind energy into northeast Nebraska and southern SD. Extreme instability is anticipated over this same area, and the latest RUC models (http://www.twisterdata.com) suggest that storms should initiate by about 21z. This environment looks very favorable for tornadic activity, so residents should definitely be mindful of changing conditions. A number of our northern Plains live-streamers will be covering this event as well, so you can follow them on the Live (http://chase.tornadovideos.net/pages/full_screen) page, as always! Strong storms are also possible over parts of the east coast, including the Delaware River areas in northeast PA east into the New York City vicinity -- lots of storms expected today across the US!
Also, yesterday was a pretty eventful severe weather day for the Great Lakes region. Storm chaser Andrew Pritchard caught the tornado below near Fort Atkinson, WI, one of several tornadoes this storm produced!

Some massive hail was reported from these storms in Vivian (east of Murdo on the linked map), South Dakota

Hi MB,
WOW! That is seriously huge hail!
I read a report on Mike Hollingshead's (extremeinstability) site about that storm. He has a few structure shots there too.
Apparently a couple of the guys I know well on deviantart were in that hail core (near the Vault region) so I might see if they have any more shots of that monster hail.
Kindest regards.

The video from that link is worth a look. Puts it into perspective in the last part when he's holding it.
HUGE !!

That is massive! I cannot believe that Aurora, Nebraska and then South Dakota approaches the record a few years ago and now this one just obliterates that!

Hi guys,
Here's another link from NOAA with some very nice photos and measurements of a few large hail stones.

I recall a discussion several years back in terms of the huge hailstones in the 6" to 8" range in the storm NSW database. This new record challenges claims of possible exaggeration. Several hailstones were reported in the 6" range in this storm alone. The high CAPE environments seem to favour these gorilla hail record events!
