Tornado outbreak possible for parts of the midwest!
(http://www.tornadovideos.net/images/stories/2010/june_2010/6.5.10.day1otlk_1200.gif)Zonal flow has been dominating the weather over most of the country for the past week; that can mean a period of relative calm over the Plains and midwest during storm season. But, since even minor changes in the orientation and strength of the wind fields at
different levels of the atmosphere can cause big changes, zonal flow patterns always need to be watched closely, as severe weather outbreaks can often take shape with little advanced notice -- comparatively speaking. It appears as though one of those events is shaping up right now, as very strong directional shear is expected to materialize later this afternoon in a highly unstable environment. As a result, intense supercells are likely to erupt over eastern Iowa and northern Illinois, bringing the risk of strong tornadoes along with damaging hail and wind. Chasers will likely begin streaming this event during the mid-afternoon, as storms are likely "early" -- follow along by clicking the "live" tab, above. And, as always, people in the risk areas are urged to be prepared, as this could be a significant severe weather day.
