Title: Super Typhoon Rammasun: 7 - 12 May 2008
Post by: Peter J on 13 May 2008, 06:11:28 AM
Hi all,

I have been tracking a very destructive typhoon churning south of Japan. ST Rammasun at reports of last night Melb time was churning up the seas south of Japan with wind gusts up to 150kts - this would rate it in the mid Cat 5 hurricane levels - a high end Cat 5 cyclone here. This storm had a classic shape about it - was quite wide and strong circular storm motions - if this thing had hit Japan, it could have wiped out a fair chunk of buildings near its centre eye-wall. However, it is moving to the east-south-east of Japan, and will miss it entirely.

Just for the enthusiasts I dare say.

looks like the storm is starting to weaken - according to the Joint Japanese/USA weather group JWTC - the pic from the Feng Shun satellite - the NW edge of the storm is outflowing, and its strength is dropping rapidly.

This is the track of the typhoon so it did not hit any of the main islands directly.

2 Islands west of there Jimmy,   Panay.  Cindy's home city is Iloilo.   She lands in Sydney
late saturday afternoon.   Its been a long 2 weeks along

On a weather note....  with other systems passing through the region she is in,  the last few
days  12 - 15 May has seen heavy rain and much flooding.

Dave,

Imelda suggests that where she lives, it is known as the typhoon free city. Perhaps too far south? She describes it as being "cold" yesterday 15th May 2008. Haha probably 25C.

Good to know the typhoon did not hit her area.
