Title: Tropical Cyclone SIDR - India / Bangladesh
Post by: Mike on 16 November 2007, 04:35:52 AM
Dangerous cyclone tracking directly for Calcutta at the moment.  Storm has all the classic signs and this should be one to watch with interest.

Tropical Cyclone Sidr has maximum sustained winds currently estimated at 130 knots with gusts to 160 knots, is heading straight for the populated and storm surge-prone Southeast India/western Bangladesh Coast. Wave heights are estimated to be around 10 m (33 ft) in the vicinity of the eye, setting the stage for a potentially catastrophic storm surge at landfall in about 36 hours, especially immediately east of the eye.  To those who are unaware, Calcutta and the surrounding landfall is at an elevation that has always sustained massive damage due to storm surges, with wave heights this large things will become disastrous!

Here's the track map from the JTWC, sat images - check out the Himalayas in the high res version!

I would suspect it's monsoonal - trying to locate a GFS to view also...

Sidr is now a Category 5 by SS standards.

Hope the shear gets to it quickly, this will be disastrous if it hits the coast as a 5 or 4.
