Title: Showers/ storms NSW, QLD 10-15 November 2009
Post by: Colin Maitland on 11 November 2009, 04:40:56 AM
Running through some of the models and it seems to indicate the area around Stanthorpe and the surrounding NSW border region to be in the firing line for some descent storms on Friday.

BOM's  forecast is for the chance of showers and storms for QLD on Friday and Saturday, and NSW (the Hunter region, Northern Tablelands, Northern Rivers and mid North Coast) from Thursday onwards.

I agree I have been looking at the charts for a few days and they look like we have some potential for storms on friday.

I have looked at the stormcast myself just now and it looks like that on Tuesday the northern parts of the northern rivers could expect some decent thunderstorm activity. If anything we could have some cells turn severe just like last week.

There was a beautiful storm to our far east yesterday evening over the mountains. Also a few to our north and I could see some lightning once it was dark. We have a forecast for dry thunderstorms this afternoon, with little or no rain.

Western Sydney thunderstorm 12 November 2009

Following on from a warm day across Sydney's west where peak temperatures reached 35 to 38C, a cooler southerly change late afternoon generated some late thunderstorm activity across Sydney. I was watching the event from the rooftop of a car park off Newton Road Blacktown. The storm brought a sharp shower of rain, strong gusty southerly winds and some spectacular cloud to ground lightning strikes. It brought more rain than I had expected. There was no hail but the rain drops were large but cold. A second thunderstorm later developed just to the north and west of Blacktown that brought more cloud to ground lightning strikes.

While the shower was heavy, it only brought 3.4 mm of rain to Prospect Weather Station.

The first photo I took shows the storm cell looking south just prior to a sudden heavy shower and gusty winds that occurred.

I also managed to take one photo of a lightning flash looking north following the storm.

I got home early today from work and saw the storms building up south on the radar. The first one that came over just after 5 here had died off a fair bit from when it was over Campbelltown and had a few lightning strikes to my south, mostly intra clouds. However after the main dark clouds had passed over and headed towards Manly the lightning intensified quite a bit and we were treated to some very nice flashes, some landing within a kilometre. One nice one had 5 flashes that started to the west then over about 1 second moved east, hitting ground each time. The rain also came well after the darkest clouds had passed over with outflow evident from the wind and rain direction.

The 2nd front mainly passed to our NW from here, but gave some nice lightning as well but nothing close. Tried a few shots hoping to catch some daytime lightning but it wasn't strobing enough and had no luck. Still got a nice view of the clouds with the sun lighting up the foreground.

Hopefully a taste of things to come anyway, only about 2mm here at Rydalmere so not enough to help the garden but at least it cooled things down after a fairly warm day.

Also noticed the planes on the northern approach to Sydney were taking some very unusual paths, flying west-east either just to my north or over the Parramatta River at quite a low altitude, obviously avoiding the storms to my north. Never seen them take those approaches before.

Good to see you experienced first hand yesterdays afternoon storms Harley,
It hit Parramatta area between 6 and 7 pm with some decent flangs that rattled the windows. The photos below are from the second cell at around 6.40 pm as the cell became quite lightning active to the north west of parramatta throwing out some decent cg's. The first cell 20 minutes earlier, was directly over us  and produced several gunshot flangs . The temperature of 38 degrees and some decent instablity in  the atmosphere certainly paid off with a wonderful display of lightning, Cheers, Con.

Hi,

I didn't chase southwest but merely decided to chase locally once the cells repositioned northwest. However, once I saw strong winds and dust approaching, I decided to call off any chase amongst the trees weakened by a lack of rain, etc. Some nice localised lightning as well.

Across the road, and the increase in moisture and boundary interaction created relatively interesting structures as the bases lowered. There was northerly inflow aloft as well as north northeast winds at the surface but this was undercut by strong southerly outflow from the storms in the southwestern suburbs.

Here are a couple of images:

The rest of the images are located in the photo catalogue for the 12th November 2009 event (http://www.australiasevereweather.com/photography/photos/2009/jd20091112.html)

There is a good chance we will get a repeat of last Thursday activity. There is a currently a strong updraft North of Warwick and a cell now approaching from the south west.

The wind is just starting to pick up and it's dark and nasty looking to the  south. Time will tell!

Hi guys, it's great to be back (at least for a short while)

I followed the weather on the back of the line as it started firing NE of Dubbo around 12:30pm EDST. I traveled 1000k's from Albury back to Lightning Ridge today and had the EWN and BoM warned storms on my right hand side all afternoon. I heard a large hail possibility for the storms East of Walgett on ABC radio while I had them in plain sight close on 5pm EDST. There were 5 very large main updraft towers, of these, 3 had pretty decent overshoots above the cap and fairly crisp anvils so I could believe that large hail would be possible. I couldn't see any lightning due to the blazing afternoon sun but I could hear it on the radio in the ute the whole way from Dubbo up. Temps are just crazy out here so the convection on these pulse storms is ballistic!

There was a large, highly active storm sitting out to our NE as of an hour or so ago (8:30-9pm EDST) but I'm too tired to go out. I did watch it for a while and I would guess it was almost at Mungindi when I saw it earlier, and so just out of reach.

The temp were still 36degress C at 9:10pm EDST! This heatwave is pretty harsh to say the least! It was even hot down in Albury. The days were averaging 34-36deg. C and I did see several very large storms in the area over my 4week stay. Seeing the convection driving monster updraft towers over the Snowy Mountains each afternoon is something to behold! These soon dissipate with strong shearing but look pretty darn awesome during their short-lived maturity.

Looks like the Northern Rivers will be in for something tomorrow. I hope a few SC's show up somewhere given the right conditions arise :)
Kindest regards and take care,
Shauno.

A couple of shots for the record. Really didn't amount to much but this shelf was well organised by the time it got to Allora (seen in a mates images) These are taken over Warwick and also showing the South Westerly storm before it collected the cell Nth West of Warwick. At first I thought the storm from the SW would miss us but it came straight over. I was heading to Glen Innes and waited a good hour. Turned out the hail from the South Westerly caused millions dollar damage to the fruit crops around Stanthorpe.

I got going after an hour and drove South through it and the mammatus shelf on the back end near Stanthorpe was pretty incredible and widespread. (
couldn't stop for photos)

Better late than Never.

Me and Matt Smith were actually actually on the Stanthorpe storm that happened  to create millions of dollars worth of damage to crops. We saw some footage on the news that
evening, and it appeared copius amounts of 3-4cm hail had fallen just west of Stanthorpe. A look through the radar archives  suggests this storm mave have been
supercellular at one stage.

Heres a photo looking Southwest of Stanthorpe.

As you can see it looks quite mean with multiple inflow bands almost over our heads some nice features at the base.

This storm became outflow dominated, however more storms rapidly developed west of Warwick on the outflow boundary as seen on the radar archives. We raced Northwest reaching  the town the Pittsworth at approximately 5:20pm.This is where we finally escaped the rain and  caught sight of an amazing shelf cloud to our south!!!!

At this stage we had strong inlow at our backs, with CGs every 15seconds or so. We retreated northwards towards the town of Dalby, and this is when the storm looked far less
spectaular. We did however get onto a nice lightning show north of Dalby.A great chase!
