Widespread thunderstorm activity is again expected over coming days, with Western NSW and NE NSW / SE QLD looking the best for today. Some areas have quite a nice shear profile.

Hi there

Took this looking out of Goonellabah towards the Casino area. There lots of rumbling happening and a definite anvil shape in the cloud. Some lightning around too.

Hi guys,
We just had three highly active cells come through our area, the first was a localised, fairly high based LP cell with some nice structure, around 6pm. The other two, both HP one coming over town just now (7:50pm) sending down some ripper HUGE CG and an abundance of crawler, while the third went past us skirting a few k's to the south west. No real structure to be seen from the two large cells but very nice activity all round :)

Will post a few shots shortly.
Cheers.

A couple pics from this afternoon's action. There were some amazingly close bolts around, most of which came down while trying to position myself away from oncoming car headlights during the larger, later storms? This was the first time my dad (70yrs) had come out with me and even he was getting frustrated by all the great bolts I was missing lol, all I could do was laugh and tell him that was a pretty normal part of lightning photography.
The first shot is from the LP cell that was first off the ranks this afternoon. The rest are from the 2 cells following.

(Mike: The daytime pics were a total fluke!!! I still don't know how I managed them, particularly the third shot below? I think thats my best daylight CG to date.)
Cheers guys.

Another storm in Coffs Harbour today. Had stacks of lightning and many were close when it moved over. They also wanted to pulse a lot. Heres some pics of the storm, no severe weather in my area probably some further north near Nana Glen or so.

Hi all, went out on a chase yesterday with Michael Bath and Jason( WZ Pato).Headed out to near Casino and watched a few weak cells trying to get going. We then decided to change position and move to the north of town to see some cells finally fireing. These cells were very Cg active and strobed pulsed many times.
Moving to Kyogle we then set up at a vantage point and enjoyed a wet Cg barrage onto the township in light rain with wind photographing was difficult. The cells exhibited very low bases at times and with the very moist profile of the cells very heavy rain was observed.
Had an enjoyable afternoon Go NRTH NSW!!!

A few of mine from yesterday arvo to add to the collection of great storm structure and lightning photos in this thread.

The first 5 are from just NW of Casino. This storm was nicely organised for at least 30 minutes and during that time put out an extraordinary number of pulsing CGs. The timelapse video of this storm should be very interesting.

We then moved to the Kyogle lookout. As Rodney mentioned, photographic conditions were quite difficult, but this storm sure put out some lovely close lightning !   It was a bit freaky with the bolts that close but it's hard to leave a scene like that.

We had some very active thunderstorms roll over Narrabri from 2am-5am. The lightning detector peaked at about 40 strikes/minute within 56km range.

Local weather stations recorded a very quick 10-21mm from it.

Convection has started kicking off again this morning but it is all heading east at a great rate of knots. Skies have mostly cleared here, but looks like it will be a very busy day on the tablelands.

Gold coast certainly copped a nice light show last night! I would have managed pics had i remembered to take the camera with me!The lightning carried on till way after 10pm here in carrara then had a nice little cell come accross at 4am this morning that was fairly lightning active and it carried some decent rain in it as well. The lightning went till at least 6am, so got a beautiful wake up call this morning the thunder was that deep and low that the windows vibrated in the top floor of my place as well as waking up my daughter who can sleep through just about anything!

Hi all,

Well as Rodney mentioned earlier, I headed out on my first real chase with himself and Michael. As Rod and Michael have already explained we encountered two very CG active storms near Casino and Kyogle. I managed to capture my first lightning shots( due to the strobing nature of the bolts). As I have only a point and shoot camera I was pretty happy however as you can see next time I'll have to remember to take my tripod. And I think it might be time to upgrade my equipment to DSLR. Anyhow hope you enjoy.

Cheers Jason

Very nice photos guys and I hope you had a lot of fun out there. I was at home when the storms moved over Uki just on dark last night. I did take a number of pics but mostly they came out as just lighting up the sky. There were some CG's and a few loud cracks nearby but my camera missed those. Doh!! Anyway the lightning was pretty neat and rainfall was light to moderate.

Hi all, went for a chase this arvo....5 steps out to the back verandah.Michael Bath was here to enjoy the show. Boy did it rumble and crash and put on some pulsey Cg's just accross the valley!!! Heavy rain soon followed mixed with hail up to 2cm in size which melted quickly.

Some brilliant photos in this thread. Well done!

Me and a mate of mine chased the Southwest Slopes yesterday evening and overnight. Convection, didnt get going until late, and this made us worried for a while there.  The first storms developed south of the border near the town of Yarrawonga. One of these storms became severe displaying a nice backsheared anvil, but this storm was far to south to even bother with.

We encountered our first storms of the evening near Temora. One of these storms had some fantastic lp structure, and it was rotating nicely as well!

This storm delivered nothing but hail, ranging from 2cms up to nearly golf ball sized.

More storms continued throughout the night producing some awesome lightning at times.

A great chase. Its nice to get my first decent storms of the season as well.

This Pic was taken from my verandah this afternoon 23/10/2007 at approx 1500. (sorry no spectacular CG shots)

This was looking east from Goonelllabah, my question is below the bottom line in the photo there was very very low cloud and masses of it moving rapidly to the north.
The cloud mass in the top say half of the photo was being drawn into the approching storm/front equally as fast as the stuff moving north; almost like rotation but not quite.

Is this normal? For the storm to be churning in on itself like that? and for masses of cloud to be detached from the main body of cloud be very close to the ground and moving quick?

about 15 minutes this passed and we got pea sized hail and LOTS of rain. wind a few closeish CG's

Cheers

Mat

Pingtang that LP looking cell is beautifull mate! I bet you were stoked with that and with the lightning show!

Did anyone see the storms this arvo east of Moree? The anvils on them were 200+km long! and they appeared to be right and left moving splits on radar.

Jeff.

Hi Jeff, yes I was watching those Moree cells on radar I could even see lightning from the anvil of the right moving storm here in Coffs when the storm was still west of Armidale! Must have really got up high into the atmosphere. Also a nice cell formed over Dorrigo earlier I took photos from home just a shame I'm on the wrong side of it here.

Yes Ive managed to get some pics of the storm approaching Uki/Mt Warning from the Kyogle area. Just now I was out and I captured some pretty mammatus. Behind the mammatus there is a grey wall thats not very interesting to photograph. There is some thunder off in the distance but it appears to be moving slowly at this stage. The cloud base is quite high and there is no lightning to report yet.

Infact the BOM has singled it out in there warning, don't think I've seen that before outside Sydney and SE QLD:

"At 3:26pm a particularly severe thunderstorm was moving towards Grafton and is expected to move over the town in the next 30 minutes."

Yeah, will be interesting to grab the observations from that area when they're updated. I've only see them do it once before (point out a storm outside of a Capital), and that was the one that hit Gayndah....

Good evening everyone

Back from a long 2000km cruise up the coast inbetween HSC examinations, to Lismore and beyond. I know it may have been a mediocre storm but sure did I enjoy catching up with Rodney, Michael and Jimmy. The lowering under the base with the occasional CG whilst it continued to put up fresh pulses was enjoyable. Out of nowhere in the space of about 5mins it decided to collapse, updrafts lost the upward drive and we were left with a lonely anvil with the odd spot of rain (How terribly exciting) ahh well. Thanks again to Jimmy for helping me out with that eftpos issue, I'll be handing you $5 when I catch you out there one day this season and the insightful conversations between us (I do mean that). Also to Rodney for the wonderful accomodation and chase in Buffy (The tough old Rav4, wonderful handling I must say ;) ). I wont be posting any pics just yet as I have not got my computer with me (Its currently at a friends place being carefully looked after whilst i finish the HSC), although luckily I have this computer (Which i rarely use, only sis does because its painfully slow).

Even though it wasn't overly successful I developed an extensive knowledge of the beautiful chase region of NE NSW, must I say I am jealous, you fellas are very lucky.

RE: MichaelB's post

Yes those white/grey patches are quite often anvils, the radar displays them as white because of the very light 'virga' rain that falls from them (Evaporating before it reaches the ground) Quite often due to reaching a warmer layer.  This is annoying when chasing if its reaching the ground because it gets in the way of photography especially in SW upper flow (especially when you want the north side of the storm).

Hope this help. If other people want to ellaborate go for it.

Shane

Shane,

You are welcome but don't worry about repaying - it was on the house. After all I ate half your chips if you had noticed. I can be very sneaky.

Pity the storm, did not explode like the storm new Inverell yesterday. I headed out today passed Inverell and photographed the leaf litter from what was most likely hail up to golf ball size to the west of the town but some leaf litter in town. Hail in town was thumbnail size or thereabouts.

I ended up chasing north of Warialda. There were some lightning active severe storms tapping into the high CAPE air though the shear was not able to sustain the storms for long enough. About 30km S of North Star, I filmed timelapse as well as pulsing lightning activity - just standard disorganised activity. Some daytime bolts to add to the collection.

However, it was north of North Star that I filmed and photographed a very high contrast and more organised high precipitation storm. I thought it had some possibilities of being supercellular in behaviour but nevertheless it quickly became outflow dominant. Nice timelapse though.

I will post pictures soon.

Regards,

Jimmy Deguara

Sounds like you had fun Shane.

Thanks for the reply. I sort of assumed something similar to what you said with looking at the sky and looking at bom.

So would it be fair to say that a storm's cloud footprint might look like what I have attached?

Hopefull i will have some nice pics to post up tonight or tomorrow! Interesting that we have been on and off and on severe storm warnings for the duration of the afternoon and evening and only now we are seeing stuff i think i counted 8 severe cells headed for brisbane-coolangatta hopefully one makes it here alive and full of good photo opportunities!

With my report listed above, I thought I would post the photographs from the event. Thanks go to Michael who has provided assistance as per usual in getting it online and so efficiently.

Quite a few daytime bolts around of which I captured a handful... The green coloration was very inviting as well as the contrast this position offered

Late breaking isolated activity southwest of Kyogle. Chased with Jimmy Deguara and met up with Rodney Wallbridge and Shane Watson. This storm got its act together briefly with one particularly powerful updraft pulse, but was one of the fastest I've ever seen with its dissipation!  Had a lovely sunset mammatus filled anvil.

Widespread development across the region but the sky soon became cluttered by mid afternoon. The first photo is of the storm which impacted on Tabulam and Bonalbo early afternoon. Damaging winds, flash flooding (76mm at Bonalbo) and a lot of hail to 3cm fell from that storm.

Good stuff Michael!

Few pics of mine from the 28th October here. I was lucky enough to fly from Melbourne to Brisbane this day and scored a nice supercell over NE VIC from the plane. I then also flew under the anvil of a storm over NE NSW before getting home to my place in inner Brisbane to watch the 4 hour lightning show unfold.

Pics from the flight here...

Hi Macca,

I recall seeing that particular cell and then you suggested to me it was a supercell. It was moving at some rate of knots. Do you know what severe weather was reported with this event?

Very nice view of the storm by the way and overshoot! For how long did the overshoot last whilst you were photographing?

Regards,

Hey Jimmy,

It certainly was an awesome storm!!  The BoM recieved reports of golf ball sized hail from this storm and I think there was some wind damage as well (not surprising given the shear).  The cell maintained almost an identical structure from the moment I saw it to the time when I lost sight of it - probably around 30 minutes.  I was quite impressed by the ability of the storm to "stand up" to the shear on this day.  I wish I'd been able to see what it looked like from the ground (if I'd been able to keep up with it).
