Title: Rain event SE Qld and NE NSW: 19 - 25 August 2007
Post by: Jimmy Deguara on 18 August 2007, 12:56:01 PM
Hi,

Given the existence of a northwest cloud band over Queensland and moving into northeast New South Wales and southeast Queensland, a separate thread I thought would be appropriate. I have not looked further into models given time constraints but even just looking at the increasing development of the cloud band itself and its orientation, and the existence of a low pressure system, it provides an interesting scenario and potential for some much needed rainfall for the region.

Jimmy Deguara

All the models are now in agreeance for a good rainfall event. Some locations should end up with around 100mm for the Sunday into Tuesday period (hopefully me too!)  GFS 12z run is now also forecasting the trough to persist along the QLD coast and a coastal low to develop mid week.

The high should end up in a good cradling position for decent rainfalls.

Sounds good, already overcast here, must have set in last night. I also hear of weak thunderstorms in this system, is this true?

Yes, quite possible but I don't think you'll see much unless it's from clearing storms along the coast.

LAPS differs from GFS a bit this arvo with the Australian model suggesting a low will form off the Northern Rivers and direct the better falls into the Mid North Coast and Hunter. The US model has the high a little stronger keeping any coastal low formation a bit further north - which is certainly more favourable for heavy falls in the Northern Rivers and Southeast QLD.

BoM have upgraded the NR and MNC forecasts to include the possibility of heavy falls later Sunday and into Monday.

Michael and Steven,

The clear start evolved into a chaotic sky with stratocumulus and altocumulus as well as the cirrus streaming from the NNW. I certainly hope that a low does not bomb all of the activity out to see. I do anticipate some showers or rain here (Sydney region) over the next few days.

Well, we seem to have missed most of the rain, presumably because the band moves E/SE wards, as a result some drizzle and strong winds, oh and cold too.

Yes, quite cool under all this cloud. Max of 15 today. 8mm to 9am and 7mm since then. BoM have just issued a severe weather warning for here tipping a low to form off the NSW/QLD border.  Will certainly become more interesting if that eventuates.

NSW SEVERE WEATHER WARNING
for Flash Flooding
For people in
Northern Rivers, Midnorth Coast

Issued at 4:20 pm on Sunday 19 August 2007

Synoptic Situation: 3:00 pm EST Sunday
A low pressure trough is expected to deepen off the northern NSW/southern Queensland coast within the next 24 hours. Rainfall is expected to increase overnight tonight and through Monday in the
northern Mid North Coast and Northern Rivers districts.

Very heavy rain may cause local flash flooding on Monday.

Been a LONG time since I've seen this sort of forecast for here (Northern Rivers):

Forecast for Sunday evening
Rain periods with some moderate to heavy falls developing. Moderate to fresh southeast wind, becoming strong and gusty on the coast.

Forecast for Monday
Rain periods with moderate to heavy falls and local flash flooding. Fresh to strong and gusty east to southeast winds.

I remember a low pressure system, in March 2004, did quite some damage to our garden. I suppose the strong winds has got to do with the fact a low is forming, am I correct?

Hi,

We had whopping 66.6mm of rain over the past 24 hours which is pretty impressive for here. The ground looks saturated and I think I would require alternative routes across South Creek this morning.

Michael how did you go up there - my assumption pretty impressive given the forecast.

Sydney and the Central Coast have certainly copped the best falls so far. Best around the Northern Rivers are in the 60 to 70mm range in the 24 hours to 9am.

I measured 7.6mm to 9am Sunday, and 57.4mm to 9am today. This is my highest 24 hour rainfall since 57.6mm on 11/9/2006 and interestingly 72.6mm on 30/8/2006 - another August rain event just last year.

Brisbane radar derived rainfall for the 24 hours to 9am 20th August - these figures are a very good indication of the totals within radar range.

Light rain persists with an overcast nimbostratus layer as well as stratus from the southeast. I found it difficult to determine where the rain was streaming on from but I suspect from the northeast in the mid levels. Quite cool today as well as one would anticipate.

Best falls today are certainly on the Mid North Coast. 9am to 3pm figures include 70mm Coffs Harbour, 54mm Forster, 51mm Kempsey. Also on the flood warning page 105mm at Taylors Arm, and a 119mm at a location in the Coffs area (in 6 hours)
http://www.bom.gov.au/hydro/flood/nsw/midnorth.shtml

28mm here since 9am.

LAPS seemed to forecast the rainfall areas better than GFS for this system - so far.

Up to 218mm at Coffs Harbour (Perry Drive AWS) since 9am - not bad for 9 hours. Several other stations on the Mid North Coast have had well over 100mm in the same period. No flood warnings, but there is a flood watch current.

38mm here since 9am. Have had westerly winds since 11am today which certainly shows which side of the trough line we are on!

lol, I can see a full moon right now, and the wind picking up, apparently the low off the east coast is just off cape moreton. Dangerous seas, gales are the result of what the bureau says is unusual for this time of year, interestingly looking at the 4 image radar loop of Moree, I can see some sort of rotation going on, what?!?!?! inland? That unusual!!

Hi Steven,

The circulation is due to the upper level low over the inland NSW/QLD border area - you can see it on these charts. The first is the Relative Humidity, and wind speed and direction at 700hPa (about 3000 metres), the second is the temperature/thickness and wind speed and direction at 500hPa (about 5700metres)

Well that explains it all doesn't it. I thought the rotation was due to the fact of the air being sucked into the low itself, much like an inflow of a thunderstorm, thats how I see it.

Some nice winds on the eastern side of that low - double triangles!  what's the outlook for it deepening or is it moving too fast to stay over land for any further timeframe?

Here in Armidale we have not got anywhere near as much as other place all the way down the coast (although they need it more. Even though we are now drought declared, at the moment we have no water restrictions and no proposals to impose any because our dam is full). The levels of rain seems to have dropped off dramaticaly inland. Even so, we have had non-stop steady rain for a number of days. I measured single figures late last week and over the weekend, then 23mm to 9am this morning. This afternoon at about 5:00 I measured 24 mm in the guage, and it has been steadily raining ever since. Official Armidale Airport figures at 10pm were 45.2mm. It has been cool, but no-where near as cold as June!
The Grafton radar image is quite deceiving. It shows Armidale always on the edge of the rain, just missing out on it, only rarely recieving a very light sprinkle from the corner of the rain band. Moree's image isn't much better. I suppose the signal was weakened through the rain band? I can't wait until we get the Tamworth doppler radar. It will improve our coverage here, and give up doppler radar services!

Low is just off the Tweed Coast by the looks.

Noticed some clear skies after midnight, but conditions sure changed here just before 5am. From three hours of calm winds to strong S-SE. Moderate to heavy rain has been falling since. Up to 75mm since 9am yesterday.

Michael,

Awesome! The low I assumed is now in a deepening phase or developing nearby. Have not checked the models but is the low anticipated to track down the coast? We awoke to stratocumulus and the odd shower around.

Not sure if the low is deepening but the pressure gradient is certainly tightening with the high pressure west of Tas building.

This 8am satpic shows a low well east of Fraser Island, and another one causing the weather just off the QLD/NSW border. This is tipping to edge north-eastwards.

Winds are virtually calm near Tweed Heads, but gusting over 100km/h at Cape Byron - a distance of just 50km.

82mm to 9am here, but some isolated falls over 300mm in 24 hours in the Coffs Harbour region. Surprisingly very few flood warnings.

Very very calm here, in fact it looks like everlasting type of sunny weather, but very errie. Not a breath of wind or cloud in sight. Yet just 75km away Brisbane and the Gold coast is being blown over, I've never seen this before, so it is very startling.

Gales as high as 46 knots are hitting us at the moment, so blowy things are rattling around like crazy, with sustained wind speed of 67km/h I'd imagine theres been some damage. Our power has been flickering, temporary outages, and just plain windy. not much rain wise, we picked up 12mm so far at Maroochydore. Quite scary.

Another 46mm here since 9am yesterday, bringing the total at McLeans Ridges to 190mm for this event. No flooding as the rain fell over 72 hours - a real soak in rain event. The strong winds abated during the evening here.

Hopefully a lot more rain will fall in the Brisbane and Sunshine Coast areas. Latest GFS is certainly forecasting it.

Wind hasn't eased at all since it began yesterday, although rain has eased today. Lot of leave and twig litter around the place, and trying to clean it up is annoying when it more little comes. Our biggest wind gust today was 43 knots, and it has been widely reported of fallen trees and branches.

After think the worst is over, Weatherzone reports (http://www.weatherzone.com.au/news/story.jsp?id=7289) that recent yet sharp drops in air pressure suggest a new low may be developing off the coast, certainly the case, since 11am a rainband set in (http://www.weatherzone.com.au/news/story.jsp?id=7290) from the NE, and so far we scored 34mm of rain, conditions are deteriorate once again, wind is increasing and it just looks miserable. The good thing though, the rain has put an extra months supply of water to our local dams, and a few weeks for Brisbane dams.

Getting a LOT of rain accompanied by strong winds and unbelievably thunder and lightning!, now we are up to 47mm at Maroochydore, and going up fast! The rainband has spread out to the Brisbane dams so I would imagine them getting at least 30-40mm out of that, Brisbane is starting to get some of that rain.

EDIT: Now 50.4mm of rain, and a loud crash of thunder!

Been some MASSIVE falls overnight:
http://www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/wrap_fwo.pl?IDQ60361.html

Some stations in the Noosa area have had over 600mm in less than 24 hours. Some rivers are now in major flood as you would expect.

713mm at Rainbow beach, 706mm at Coops Corners, and 689mm at Mt Bilewilam and Noosa had 419mm to 9am today. Incredible totals.

Quite a similar setup to the Gold Coast floods of 30th June 2005 with a near stationary trough line allowing massive convection to train over the same area for many, many hours.

Current VIS shows another low has developed to the northeast of all the current action.

WHOA WHOA AND MORE WHOA!!!!

Rainbow Beach (approx. 200km N of Brisbane) has had 713mm in the 24hrs to 9am, closely followed up by Coops Corner which finished the 24hrs period with 706mm and Mt Bilewilam which finished with 689mm.  And by finished, I merely mean the 24 hour period...the rain is still pouring down over that area and looks to continue for at least another few hours.

Coops Corner has now had 847mm for the event and I would be surprised if they don't kick over to 1000mm by close of business today.  The first rainfall for this event fell on the 19th of August with totals on that day and up to and including this morning's reading as follows (at Coops Corner)...4mm, 33mm, 1mm, 36mm, 67mm, 713mm (!!!)...and more today.

Major flood warnings are in place in the area (not surprisingly).

Brisbane's catchments have received some good steady rain over the duration of this event too with the upper reaches of the Stanley River (which flows into Somerset Dam) scoring 225mm for the event, however, it tapered off quite a bit with the main dam (Wivenhoe) recieving 95mm for the event so far.  Certainly nothing to scoff at - with any luck we'll get another 10-15mm over the dam today with a further 40-50mm over the upper reaches of the Stanley River and we could see a boost to Brisbane's water supply by 3-5% as the water runs in over the next week.

As you can see Michael, the balance can be made up given such an extended dry period during a period of so called La Nina. It has to give eventually and it did!

Massive falls - I was wandering why you kept messaging me last night - I thought it was a case of 300m fall of rain - but that's doubled!

Not bad I must say - keep us posted.

Post on weatherzone from Blair Trewin (BOM Statistician) indicates that the previous record for a 24hr period rainfall for August in Australia is 464mm at Mourilyan Harbour on 31/8/1998.  If the 713mm verifies (officially), it will be a new August record...and by quite a long way!

Never seen anything like this since we moved on the Sunshine Coast in December 1998, all I can say that this is incredible. Totals this morning are flabbergasting, 310mm (thats in one day!!!) for Tewantin, and 192mm for Maroochydore, this is by far huge totals, luckily we haven't flooded due to higher ground but I am pretty sure that if I went around low ground places theres should be flooding. Still raining here, might even break the 300mm mark ourselves this month.

I can tell you Micheal, we just about soaked so much, it even humid in the house!!! all the run off is going downwards to the street but gutters are overflowing like crazy, it is just amazing, incredible, flabbergasting call whatever it is just crazy, hallelujah!!! By the way despite school being open, I'm not going today because of the extreme wetness around the place, might stay in and make myself a nice hot cup of soup.

By the way, were not the only ones with jaw dropping rainfall totals

713mm at Rainbow Beach to 9am this morning
706mm at Coops Corner to 9am this morning
689mm at Mt Bilewilam to 9am this morning

Those totals are very exciting yet concerning because of the extensive flooding, in fact Maroochy river has some major flooding breaking the 6m mark last night however most severely flooded places are north of the Sunshine Coast, Eumiundi is a worry as it is still rising at 6.4m, and some other moderately flooded places have rising flood waters too, but most flooding is beginning to fall now.

It reminds me alot of the Lismore floods of 2005, similar situation, but Sunshine Coast has quite a bit of terrain to worry about flooding, its only those who live in low lying areas that should watch out. The main rain has eased a little but it doesn't look like clearing until the weekend, so those totals might be bumped up still.  The wind has died off here as well, although there are some occasional gusts.

This long-lasting event finally comes to a close. The cloud associated with the trough very quickly dissipated last night.   I've done up an interactive satellite loop from last Sunday to this morning (about 5.9mb)

http://australiasevereweather.com/storm_news/2007/satpics/20070819/satellite_loop_20070819.htm

Also, an MSL chart loop which shows just how persistent the east coast trough was. A couple of small lows formed within the trough on various days bringing the extreme rainfalls.

For all the bad things that may have occurred re rivers breaking their banks, this is just what that part of the country needed.  Ironic how weather patterns change so quickly after such a dry hot spell to bring relief to all those rural areas that so desperately needed it. fantastic to see and I'm sure the farmers are sitting on the porchy enjoying a beer watching this rain fall. :)

Went last night to the Maroochy river at about 8:55pm, it was on the verge of breaking on the road, it overflowed onto some areas, including a ramp (carpark near the edge of the water) the water blended in with the road as if the beach was on the road! thankfully it didn't rise any higher and subsided a bit today. Today it cleared up very quickly and by midday it was clear blue sky, a bit of a strange feeling after last seeing the sun on Tuesday. The rain also filled our dams up to 100% and are still coping with the tremendous water flow.

I took these two pictures from inside the car, we got out of there ASAP. Water rose quite quickly somehow when we were there as it was breaking its banks.

Just found that the BoM have issued a detailed report on the Sunshine Coast rainfall event:
