Title: Storms (incl night waterspouts) and Rain NSW / QLD : 7-8 Sep 2009
Post by: Colin Maitland on 08 September 2009, 02:28:53 AM
We have storms predicted for this afternoon then tending towards thundery rain later this evening. Ran the skewT analysis for forecast max and dew points and at this early stage it is showing the possibility of severe storms. Need to see what the analysis will be with the new sounding just after 11.00am. It could be a good afternoon in SEQ.

Col,

No doubt there should be storms around though I am very concerned about 'better quality storms' based on the mass of cloud cover. I would probably assume based on the models that the soundign will eventually show almost railyway tracks (moist sounding) in the mid levels. Not something I enjoy seeing on soundings.

Some action on the SW outskirts of Sydney now. Will it survive the drop off the escarpment into Wollongong ?

Pity the new Terrey Hills radar is not online till Wednesday.

Warwick SE Qld. 7/09/09

A terrific storm just passed through here! Crop saving rain for many farmers who up till friday night had not seen rain for two months. Plenty of CG'S in this storm and thunder but have been unable to see anything all afternoon other than cloud cover. Was caught of guard as I had been driving around looking for a sign other than grey cloud, just came out of nowhere and passed in ten minutes!

Regards,
Chris.

That front Chris is just about upon us in Brisbane. No warnings as yet but looks like plenty of rain.  Northern NSW should be getting this rain as well and might put a bit of rain in Michael Baths water tanks.

Once again the main rain band has decided to bypass us and hit Brisbane instead. I can't see any real visible lightning towards that way because the atmosphere is cluttered with low cloud.

It's hard to say if the storms contain any significant hail, being Spring and all though I would imagine there being some.

Thunderstorm - Western Sydney 7/9/2009:

A thunderstorm did pass across Western Sydney between 5.20 pm and 6 pm and another separate thunderstorm cell passed to the south.

However the storm that passed over Western Sydney was moving reasonably fast but did not drop substantial rainfalls.  The highest rainfall total occurred at Toongabbie with 4.5 mm falling, 4 mm at Northmead, 2 mm where I live in Blacktown and 2.5 mm at Seven Hills. Most other totals were light as well.

Driving home at the corner of Church Street and the Great Western Highway intersection Parramatta, some very large raindrops started falling at around 5.35 pm. This was followed by a brief downpour but a few minutes later the rain ceased. There were some moderate winds in that area (Great Western Highway) accompanying the rain but no hail fell. I saw one cloud to ground lightning strike and some intra cloud lightning. I noted heavier rain falling just to the north of Parramatta City Centre.

My friend Rita driving in Epping advised me she experienced a burst of heavy rain and some small hail in that locality. I also heard on the radio a few reports of small hail occurring at locations generally East of Seven Hills and around Parramatta as the storm passed over.

Wow. I retract what I said earlier as we just had the heaviest rain seen since the May rain events, I'm sure. Can't understand how the airport didn't pick up anything out of this but it was rather isolated. I'd presume 20-30mm of rain has fallen locally which is a good thing considering how dry it's been.

Hi,

Chased the storm near Campbelltown - was in position for it to come through. I did get the tiniest hail but I was just south of the main core really - very difficult to chase in Sydney these days - too much traffic. But the gust front was half decent though elevated somewhat.

I just had a storm with light hail about 5mm and a couple of strikes close to the house, I feel a bit deaf at the moment, even the animals are quiet. It has moved towards Araluen/Batemanns Bay, the air after is very....cold.
This one was the first for the season, I had warning, my big fellow doesn't like them and he got agro on the chain, so I fed everyone early and just finished and got him of the chain, I didn't have to say anything he was like a flash in the house and under my bed, before I got even in the door, it is funny.

We just had a very heavy downpour here in Ballina and it is very sticky and hot. A cell is developing in the casino region is anybody chasing? I think all this rain will evaporate now causing the storm to build.

We have had two showers pass through this afternoon up at Goonellabah. Not a huge amount in them which is a shame however MB mentioned small hail at his place.

Ok guys not much happening today with thunderstorms but heavy showers that’s for sure. In the first picture copyrighted from Michael Baths webcam is the image showing the small hail... I think. And the second image is some development from that cell heading toward us. The third one is after our heavy downpour.

Nice to see a bit of storm action in this thread !

Stormboy - yes that webcam image is when the small hail (5mm) was falling. Though you can't see much of the cloud dropping the precip as it was overhead and south of my place.

The "storm" that dropped the hail was high based/low topped with no lightning - just a cumulus congestus really.

This is the cell after it passed to the east:

Another larger cell developed near Casino and tracked over Lismore and just south of my place by 4pm. It may have had some lightning but have not had any reports of hail from it.

To the north another cell had a longish mid level funnel. The structure of this cell is probably similar to what passed overhead here.

Cropped from two photos taken 30 seconds apart.

I am Gobsmacked and told her I'd post it for her due to excitement.  Credit Darinka Braidotti.

Thought I would share these images taken on Tuesday 8th September 2009 at 9pm off Warilla Beach.

A line of storm cells off the coast of Wollongong NSW (Sth of Sydney) about 80ks offshore. Nice lightning show although my attention seemed to steer to one
particular cell that looked promising and had some structure. It then produced some excellent forked CG's although distant, checked my preview on the camera
and to my surprise there were multiple water spouts....Amazing !!!!

The Spouts could only be seen by the camera when the CG's dropped which were random, by the time that particular cell got quite active the spouts had fallen apart and with each frame I noticed that new spouts were forming and others falling apart, so it makes me wonder how many there really were on that particular storm.  Always thought a water spout would be great to see, but holy geez!!.. never thought in all the times I've photographed offshore storms the possibility of water spouts especially at night and associated with lightning.  I know it's probably a regular occurrence under the right conditions and also being at the right place at the right time and pointed at the right cell lol!!!!

PS. Quite a contrast to Monday 7th September storms that came over the escarpment from Moss Vale at 4pm and hit Wollongong with pea sized hail, heavy
rain and a few CG's to which it was all done by 4.20pm.

Enjoy
Regards, Darinka

Michael,

While I find it hard to decipher a map with squiggly lines going across it. I can tell, given the conditions on the night of this event that there might have been sufficient wind shear in the mid levels to create motion at those levels. If I'm correct.

Steven, the sounding shows a good profile for thunderstorms: relatively moist in the lowest few ks and dry above; and a steep lapse rate (the rate of decreasing temp with height). Once a bit more moisture is added to the equation in the lower levels - which happens in these situations just offshore, you can get some decent thunderstorms.

The windshear in the lower levels gives few clues regarding potential funnels/waterspouts as it is quite light. Over the smooth ocean surface boundaries / converging winds can establish circulations and if these coincide with rapidly rising air (ie. storm/large cumulus updraft) you can get a waterspout.

More about soundings is here (http://www.australiasevereweather.com/forum/general-weather-all-topics-that-are-not-current-severe-weather-should-be-posted-here/understanding-aerological-diagrams-soundings/)
