I'm beginning to think the tipster got it wrong here - only got to 11c here today, some 3c below average - and the nights have been colder too -1 to -2 in some parts in southern VIC - and TAS is not fairing much better either with snow down to low levels expected tomorrow as well.

Maybe a small dumping of snow down here might be in the wings (allegedly it is snowing in Bayswater near the Ananconda Camping store...lol)

Yes forecast for zero in western Sydney on Friday morning. And they said Wednesday with a max of 13 in the west could feel like 5 with the wind chill.

Hopefully I won't have to be on a rooftop fixing a microwave!

Quite a significant cold change is spreading over Southeast Australia at present and it should bring snowfalls to quite low levels particularly in Tas and Vic. Should see some into the NSW Central Tablelands and possibly southern parts of the Northern Tablelands.

This is the strongest cold change since mid April - which was also the last time it snowed across the alpine regions.

EDIT - just merged earlier discussion from a general weather thread

Noticed the NSW BOM forecast
Forecast for Wednesday
Very cold about the southern and central ranges with scattered showers and light snow to about the 600 to 700 metre level. Isolated showers over the remainder of the southeast and about the western slopes of the northern ranges

Possibility of snow flurries, maybe even a light dusting of snow at Guyra. The southern NT town of Walcha and settlement of Hanging Rock might
fair better.

Early season still, and usually late June - August is the time for the best snow on the NT.

Hi,

Just got a call from Nick Moir and he suggests it began to snow heavily around 5pm at Black Springs with the possibility of good cover of approximately 10 to 15cm overnight if it continued at that rate. Nick could not stay the night this time around.

Hi all,
Boy winter is really making itself known today! The temps screamed all the way to 14c at 3pm here.

Does anyone have plans for snow photography in this cold snap? All the best if you head out into it! Keep rugged up and definitely take a jumper or two lol.

Looks like the forecast has it sticking around for s few days so it's time to hunker down and throw the ol' heater on high!
Kindest regards,
Shauno

Unfortunately I won't get the chance to get to Oberon etc in the next few days. But if it happens near a weekend I will be up there with a few 4WD mates.

Also hoping for a big dump around Barrington Tops some weekend over winter, will be up there taking photos.

I remember one winter at Gosford, where snow was being reported at Kariong. I found it hard to believe until I drove over a hill at North Gosford and the rain started sticking to the windscreen. May have been more sleet than snow and not settling, but the temperature had dropped pretty quick the 30 minutes before (this was about lunchtime).
We'll keep things on topic - but for your interest this most likely was the cold snap July 1986.

ABC currently reporting snowfalls forecast down to 600 metres over the Southern Highlands and Monaro regions on the 9pm news. As well as gale force winds in some areas.

A couple of frost pictures this morning from McLeans Ridges looking into the Eltham Valley.

(http://australiasevereweather.com/forum_images/thumbs/2009061202.jpg) (http://australiasevereweather.com/forum_images/photos/2009061202.jpg)

Min temp at my place at the top of the ridge was 5.7, though it certainly looks zero or negative in the valley.

Yesterday morning (11th) the min was 5.0 but no frost was observed. There was breeze most of that night so min temps were more uniform than this morning.

The temp did a quick plummet to 8 here last night then levelled out for quite a while.

Stormboy - the report may have been 4 or 5mm not cm. The pics show only a trace of snow - which matches other reports posted elsewhere by Armidale residents.

wooooweeee it sure is a cold one this moring Ballina AP went right down to 3.1 and my station reached 4.4 this morning very early there was a touch of frost on the ballina oval and our backyard.

More on the Armidale snow --- mums friend put a ruler into the snow until it hit the ground and measured an average of 4 CM in over 10 readings in the area. so 4CM is the total. Armidale also got to -5.2 this morning with Gyura at -5.7 a cold start to winter i must say.

p.s Michel you have an awesome view!!!

Yes another frost this morning here in Schofields though not as severe as yeterday. It was definitely very white even at 8am yesterday. I have a couple of photographs this morning and may get a chance to post later.

I think we stand a good chance to crack -4C this winter if this trend continues in other words so cold so early in June. July and August often gets more severe frosts.

Oakey         -5.3C
Amberley     -2.5C
Maroochydore, Sunshine Coast  1.5C
Coolongatta  2.5C

Looks like more snow for the Alps on Monday.

happy snow hunting,

I had seen reports of -5.8c in Canberra yesterday morning, and it has been hovering around the zero mark in Mooroolbark (-1c this morning at 4am).
Feels very icy cold - good to chill the 6-pack!

About 5cm of snow did fall in Kalorama (Mt Dandenong) on Wednesday morning - provided plenty of interest for residents there.

Also, max temps here have not gone above 11c all week.

A friend who lives near Killarney Gap between Narrabri and Bingara reported some sago snow/graupel on Wednesday morning. I am not sure of the exact altitude but I would estimate this is only about 600-800m ASL. I haven't heared any reports of snow on Kaputar - conditions have mostly been clear here - but I expect Kaputar may have also had a light snow fall on Wednesday morning.

We got down to -1.2 degrees c at 4:30am with a light frost this morning. Currently temperature is at a huge 7.9 degrees. It would probably be bearable if it weren't for the stinging breeze. It doesn't seem to matter how many layers of clothing one wears, the wind goes straight through.
There is a fantastic photo on the front page of todays Border Mail of a spider's web lightly dusted with frost.
With light rain and showers forecast for the next few days hopefully the nights won't be so cold.
I never thought I would miss the west coast SO much!!!

Was nice and icy at 330am this morning when i left for work. There was a nice coating of ice on the neighbours cars, which could be seen glittering like diamonds in the streetlight. Unfortunately I wasn't at home on daybreak to see if there was any frost around, but according to my wife there was some in the neighbours yard. After checking my AWS records I noticed the temp got down as far as 0.3 degrees so nice and chilly. The overnight minimum are expected to remain in single figures for the next few days, but mostly between the 5-8 degree mark so no frosts again for a little while yet.

A very cold day in the ACT today

Severe cold spell hits Canberra
Tom Saunders, Friday June 12, 2009 - 17:30 EST
Canberra shivered through one of its coldest days on record on Friday with the high reaching just four degrees by 5pm, eight below average and potentially their coldest day in 43 years.

South of the city Tuggerong was even colder, reaching only three degrees, which could be their coldest day on record although the site has only been recording since 1996.

The surprise cold snap is the result of a very cold night followed by a cloudy day.

"After dropping to minus two degrees early in the morning a persistent layer of fog and low cloud completely blocked out the sun and prevented the temperature from rising like it normally would" said weatherzone.com.au meteorologist Martin Palmer.

"But we can't confirm the coldest day in 43 years until 9am tomorrow because a meteorological day is 9am to 9am" said Palmer.

Nearby towns were also trapped under the fog with highs reaching just six at Cootamundra and Gundagai and seven at Wagga Wagga.

More cold weather is forecast during the next few days but further near record lows are unlikely.

Thanks for the updates and pictures illustrating this particular cold snap. As promised, I have finally got onto the pictures I took of the frost on June 12th 2009. This was not as spectacular as the previous morning.
