Title: Eastern NSW Storms including Canberra severe hailstorm - 24 Feb - 1 Mar 2007
Post by: Jeff Brislane on 25 February 2007, 10:56:06 AM
Hi,

Gee it's been a great week if you like a little storm action with storms firing every day along the ranges. I haven't had a chance to chase anything until today. Kim and I headed out to watch the cells along the Blue Mountains this afternoon and we were treated to an awesome looking severe storm which backbuilt south west along the ranges before finally being overcome by outflow. Near the end we headed into it for a corepunch and were rewarded with very heavy rain, strong winds and even some small hail mixed in and the lightning was at times very impressive.

Anyway i'll post photos when I can and I hope others were out there chasing as well. Tomorrow will see the action continue along the mid-north to north coasts and inland as a change moves in tonight. There is also the probability that we will see a small low develop off the coast.

Jeff.

Hi Jeff,

I would like to see how the storm looked from the front end glad you were there. Dave Nelson was on a storm near Hilltop - we'll hear from his storm later. I moved into the Bells Line Road to see what it was like towards Lithgow - saw it was not the best moisture wise so headed back towards the boundary. The storm had moved southwards backbuilding faster than I anticipated! I got footage of some intense lightning bolts and then later observed a funnel from the back end of the storm - good interaction.

Pictures later.

Jimmy Deguara

greetings all,

and what a storm it was !!! Jimmy.   I sat ~ 100m west of the freeway on the road that goes out to Colovale
and Hilltop.  The major CG's started crasing all around within a km or 2. With many there was only a second if that
between the flash and the boom, which had that piercing hi freq. crack to them.
there was some light pea sized hail at my loc,  I suspect I was on the nthrn edge of that and it could
have been harder jst a few km's down the road in Mittagong

here's a video still of one of the strikes WOW.

(http://www.sydneystormcity.com/070224 (2579) Colovale nr freeway 08.jpg)

after some 30 mins, I left there and headed nth up the freeway to get out of the rain to make photo's
easier to take.  then again up to the Picton turnoff (the skydiving loc)
Had to get back home and pick up Cindy and head off to church by 6pm in Baulkham Hills (Norwest Blv)
.... could see another cell coming off the mountains. 3/4 way through the service could hear rumblings from
outside getting louder rushed outside at end of service (~ 1930hrs) and was greeted with torrential rain
and contineous lightning and thunder, from directly overhead.
This storm was moving quickly to the NE and it wasnt long (~30 mins) before it had left the area.

What an outstanding day!!! and week

Cheers
Dave N

Was anyone videoing the squall line afterwards yesterday? It was awesome and definately the best i've seen in a long time. Trouble was I was at a party which started just as it hit Cranebrook.

The first storms of the day popped up after midday near Marulan and Bungonia. I was very tempted to try the Southern Highlands but I had a feeling the Nowra area would do well,so I decided to chase locally. A ordomary storm developed 15kms south of Nowra after 2pm delivering some heavy rain and some rather nice Cgs but not much structure.I was tempted to go after this storm at first, but another storm captured my interest over the escarpment just 10kms to my north with a nice dark rain free base. This storm developed quite rapidly.

We went for a quick drive to the east of Nowra to get a better view.A shelf cloud/guster was starting to develop, and a heavy precipitation curtain was evident in front of the escarpment with a possible microburst amongst it as well. Some lovely CGs were touching just in front of the rain curtain about 2kms from us. The rain curtain started to close in quite quickly as did the bolt fest. When the bolts started to get within half a kilometre it was time to get in the car. We only had a 5minute opportunity with the camera before we were forced into the car.

We drove further eastwards towards the town of Shoalhaven heads and we kept ahead of the storm quite easily. We pulled over near Broughton creek for some more footage/photos. A lovely shelf cloud had developed, and the rain/hail shaft had a nice green tinge to it.

Unfortunately we got rained in after this from a weaker storms and that pretty much screwed us. We had little option but to core punch the main cell encountering some very heavy rain 40kt southerly winds and some 2-3cm hail at one stage. Driving was quite dangerous with most cars pulling off to the side of the road. The flang fest was quite amazing as well with many bolts within 300metres and one hitting a tree in front of us 100metres away.

The storm weakened quite quickly as it crossed the coast. After this we drove back home, just a 10minute drive.Mum and dad said the winds were very strong at home coming in from the north. Some tree damage was evident in parts of Bomaderry, mainly just large branches, but a fairly large tree was uprooted near my house crushing a car .The power was out until 9pm as well. A very interesting day!

I think your choice for a coastal route and storm was a good one considering the scenery! Dave, you have had a an excellent few days chasing as well. Great to see others out there doing some exploration.

Hi Michael Keene :   what camera settings were used for the staccato lightning above ?

May I suggest you not put those large copyright messages right through the middle of your images (particularly the crawler in the other thread). I understand you don't want these photos used without permission but I find it really detracts from the beautiful imagery and the point of displaying them on the web. My personal opinion only :)

Pingtang - those photos are absolutely sensational....some of the VERY best lightning photos I have seen.

Obviously that close bolt is the most startling, but those top two pics, with the precip blanketing the hills, the colours, the Cgs dropping out in front, the cows, the whole scene, are just awesome.

Dave, I'm looking forward to seeing some video, just looking at that still!!

Jeff, no video from me as I also had a function to attend. Just as I turned on to the M5 a Beverley Hills I shot 3 seconds of video from the car (around 6:00pm)....I was simply disgusted at the thought of having to head east into the city. It looked very ominous indeed even though it was 30km to the west.

Saw some spectacular CC, anvil crawlers and CG lightning above while in the city (8:00pm).

Pingtang, You guys continue to capture spellbinding storm sequences in your photos. The staccato bolt is a heartstopper!!!... a defibrillator might have to go in the camera bag as an essential accessory after that one. The colours are similar to using fuji velvia slide film, but only on digital format, very nice work.
Jeff, looking forward to seeing your efforts off the ranges. As the storm front hit the Parramatta area we too had to be indoors attending a 21st. Well there was a lot more action outside than inside as that squall line blasted through.
 Cheers, Con.

Good evening.

Thanks for the comments everybody :) I currently own an Olympus E300. This camera is over 2 years old now,so theres much better cameras out there. Having said that, the olympus does the job for me as you can see. It really picks up the colours well, whether its lightning or a sunset.

I was very happy and quite suprised when I nailed that stracato. For your information,I was doing continuous shooting at the time, theres no way to react to straccatos anyway. I bumped up the F-stop to about F12 to give me a slightly better chance with a shutter speed of 1/40.The country side is nice and green at the moment as weve had 300+ mms this month and with the mountains and cows in front of us it was quite serene.

Fanastic photos Pingtang and great clip there Dave!!! I chased with Phil on Saturday to W Sydney, then to Lithgow and back again and encountered hail up to 2-2.5cm, strong winds up to 80km/h or so, flash flooding/heavy rain and a LOT of lightning. We probably experienced around 80 flangs for the entire day, it was crazy! Anyway here are the photos.
Cell at Penrith:

I have a picture with interesting structure and also met Jeff today and saw an interesting region on the northern side of that southern storm.

I have not seen radar yet.

Very nice photos Ben -- definitely storms on Saturday produced a real lot of CG lightning.
I have extended the dates of this thread since there were some storms today and will be tomorrow.

As for tonight, there was an interesting cell which tracked over the southern highlands this evening. Paul gave me a call and indicated that it was looking quite nice on Sydney radar and was also tracking ENE. Found a street in the area that gave a reasonable view and shot of bit of video just in case (100km away I should emphasize!!).

Had an overshoot that persisted during the most intense phase around 7:40 to 8:00pm. Gradually weakened and produced some ok anvil lightning and some remarkable cloud-to-air bolts. Not much exciting video but have attached some stills since I cant ftp from here).

You can see (vaguely) in the last two shots the lightning shooting out towards the flanking line. Hope someone was taking pics as there really were some nice CA bolts.

Thanks for the comments David.. Look forward to yours Jimmy.

Yeah I saw that Bowral cell from here this evening, looked spectacular with the overshoot, flanking line later in it's life and the anvil extending a long way to the SE. I was hope for a CA to spit out but after watching a while and getting eaten my mossies I decided to duck in and get some dinner. Got a few shots of the storm but I think your photos cover it David. Missed any CA's whilst the shutter was open, only saw CA lightning, but sure made a spectacular sight with a colourful sunset here this evening too.

Hi all,

Impressive hail event - I followed it last night on radar. It began as a cluster of cells west of canberra. One cell then developed rapidly similar to the cell west of Bowral during the evening. But this one was larger. Both storms though seem to change direction as they intensified. Both were not long lived but obviously Canberra copped it!

Another round of storms again today! This time it's a nice change to see them actually come into sydney. I was out ealier and chased a little right moving cell that came off the Blue Mountains. I core punched it at Silverdale in the hope of hail but was eluded again allthough it was very intense under the core. Unknown to me though it was interacting with a severe cell near Campbelltown and by the time I got out of the precip near Camden I could see that the stronger cell further east was really going off. I was too late to catch it as it was moving at at least 70 km/h so I stopped near Narrellan. However after seeing the radar now I wish i was a little quicker and went a little further as it looks like it's dumped hail near Campbelltown.

Jeff.

The northern cell finally takes off.

The two cells together a bit later on.

Southern cell goes through a brief intensification.

This was taken near the northern cells peak.

The cell as it became outflow dominant. Note the large rainfoot extending south of the outflow.

Hi all,

   ohhhh another wonderful day !

work took me to Minto-Campbelltown area around 1330hrs. After the 2 jobs, ~ 1430hrs,  I could see that cells
were growing and that one large one was coming down off the mountains from the Katoomba area. I was moving out across the basin to the nth of Campbelltown region.  The growing cell that took my interest was out over the Camden area and was starting to look really mean.  Today I saw some of the most intense greening
in a storm that I have ever seen.

here's a few pic's, first 3 taken looking west from between Minto and C'town  the last one from within C'town
just minutes before all hell let loose.

the storm produced many excellent CG's, with one unfortunate man being struck (he's in C'town hospital
recovering)

Dave,

That cell is sensational! That developed ahead of the stuff that came off the mountains and was quickly swallowed up by it as they collided. Now I wish I had headed straight down the Northern Road instead of taking a detour to core punch the mountains cell.

Hi,

Firstly welcome to the forum Mario - your first post. That storm you posted was quite interesting given it did a sharp right move and off the coast. I am glad you captured it with the mammatus.

Jeff and Dave, the storms occurred earlier were structurally interesting. I was talking to Nick Moir this afternoon and it seems the storms may have crossed a boundary creating the interaction as illustrated in the pictures.

Fantastic - what a week!

Thanks Jeff
dang we weren't that far apart :)

The first couple of pics also show the cell whilst is was inflow dominant.  That whole base was rotating and
cloud was forming and moving up into the base.   By the time it hit Campbelltown, I suspect that situation
had changed.
I did do some video of the base at that earlier stage, maybe you may get the chance to see it at the next
social nite :)   its a bit big to post (original 2.25 minute .avi file is 149Mb and after compression still around
 50-60 meg)

Gosh,,,,,, more top pictures than you can poke a stick at in this thread -- brilliant stuff everyone!
Dave, I was streaming am radio on my computer today while writing a report. People were calling in from around Campbelltown saying they were terrified and that the storm clouds were green / aqua blue!! It must have been quite a sight and your photos show an interesting structure there!

I went up to the carpark roof at work as soon as I noticed (on sydney radar) that a storm exploded just west of Nth Ryde. The storm developed a nice base for a short while before dumping precip. Lightning was savage....thick bright CG bolts and FM static - have not heard that for a while  ;D

Great photos there Dave!!! Lovely greenage and some very nice structure there. Mario - great photo of that N Beaches storm. I happened to be right in the core of that.. 35mm in 15 mins, 2cm hail, 100km/h winds and flangs galore. Before it approached looked extremely black to the north, so I went off for a drive and tried to find a good view, but before I could it was over me. Popped outside, grabbed a few piccies of the guster overhead (rather green), and then headed back.. couldn't see a thing, visibility was around 10m, so was desperately looking to find the turnoff to my home when it began hailing. Certainly the most intense storm I have seen in Sydney for some time. Lovely rainbow over the sea and nice booms after the storm left.

Quite a few trees down, water was covering roads and pathways, lots of debris lying around, and the storm took the power out for 2 hours. Unfortunately since I was driving not many photos.. will try upload the ones I did take tomorrow. Was interesting before the storm hit, a guster/inflow band thing was lying offshore attatched to the storm.

We had a decent storm yesterday in Coffs. At first I tried to intercept a storm near Karangi but it was moving to my north quickly and decided to head home and check the radar again as I thought some storms might get going down towards the Bellingen area.

Karangi storm from home then from a position at Karangi:

The radar revealed that this was indeed the case with some storms developing a squall line to my south west. I headed down to Sawtell headland which had a great view the storm as it crept towards me.

As it got really close I thought I could make out rotation but I'm not sure as I don't have much experience in chasing storms. There was a definite  rolling of the gustfront but there was also horizontal rotation in the clouds to the south of the guster. I made a timelapse of this but I don't know where to upload avi files?

Guster:

Area that seemd to rotate:

Despite the major greenage I encountrd no hail. I did encounter some flash flooding.

Hey guys
It has certainly been a very interesting week....
Nothing much where i live... again!
hehe cant win them all but to the south and north there were some very interesting echos on the radar, we had some very close CGs while i was still in school. Im sure some of you old timers can remember what happens when that occurs. Then again i cant be sure.
Basically the teachers were driven to the point of insanity while classes screamed and ran around like it was the end of the world.
Ahhh the value of a good lightning strike is never to be underestimated.
Cheers for now

A long lived cell which developed southeast of Glen Innes about 4pm Wed 28th Feb managed to track NNE all the way to just south of Lismore by 11pm. Structure on radar is interesting once it was near and north of Grafton.

I was in Ballina for a family commitment so was only able to see the storm from a distance, but it had high tops and was quite impressive.

These first two pics were taken shortly after 7pm looking towards the southwest.

Rodney arrived just before 8pm for the riverfront show.  The storm looked quite strong, although some mid level cloud got in the way at times. The scene was quite bright due to moonlight.

Nearly all the lightning we observed was updraft type lightning, with only a few CGs seen.

We moved to near Woodburn but the lightning activity soon died off. A shelf cloud type structure was apparent though.

That's an amazing storm
One of the most structured i have seen on this site, it reminds me of a Storm i saw in mudgee that turned severe back in 2000 when i was 8 =)
nice mammatus on the edges but funnily enough not a very pronounced anvil.....
not the kind I'm used to anyway, you will usually see a large broad flat and wispy anvil gradually thickening until it backs into the storm judging by the pics it did develop but

Nice pics there Michael.  Beaut colours with the moonlight - and a vapour trail off to the right from a gobsmacked pilot hightailing it out of range!  Nice lightning to boot as a bonus.

From Penrith to Campbelltown to the Northern rivers, the storms, reports and great contrasty photos have showcased some top efforts for all of us to enjoy. Here in Parramatta , the only severe piece of atmospherics was a cell that developed to the east around 2pm yesterday that spat out a volley of cg's, dumped a 5 minute downburst, headed to the cbd before linking up with a north easterly moisture infeed which produced a brief but photogenic inflow prong and and barrel updraft before petering out after a few minutes of glory. Cheers, Con.

You're not wrong Con. This patch of weather has been a blast from the past as far as I am concerned. It has been awesome seeing all the pics come out.

Tonight, while I was leaving work, Jimmy called and suggested there was a nice cell going up over the outer southwest. I drove home with it pretty much visible through my front windscreen the entire time - looked nice. It was persisting but seemed to be falling apart as I arrived home. After eating I poked my head out of the top window and it was surprisingly dark to the west. Without further ado I jumped in the car and took off.

I started filming around the Bunnings warehouse near Bankstown airport I think it was. Again, as has been a feature of the last few days, there were some vicious CGs.....lot of current in them.

Looking west near Bunnings you can see a lowered base and quite intense precip. Wicked bolts at times although you can see my view is obstructed even here - this was as good as it got!

Slightly different perspective with the road heading slightly north of west. Yes, I'm starting to think a supercell has been born ( I should add - I'm not saying that this storm had a mesocyclone....).

Around the eastern side of Moorebank now......there was clearly a big push of outflow from the north west but this wall cloud maintained (there was clear inflow) which really got me interested.

Ok, who was closer than me? I was not close enough to see motion but this did appear to be a funnel cloud. Whether this was a small scale vortex, or whether the wall cloud itself was spinning, I cant be sure (not that it was going to tornado!). I would not rule the latter out based on beahviour

On the Banks of the river at Moorebank/Liverpool. Missed some wicked Cgs while jockeying for a position in the urban sprawl. Luckily got something.

The storm, or at least this phase, weakened after this pic was taken. You can see a nice wallcloud....same one all that time. It was gone 10 minutes later.....and I had to get home.

What a nice way the unwind after work! I know some of the other guys were on this storm for a longer period than I, so hopefully we'll see differing angles / proximity!

Hi guys, just wanted to say G'day to all my fellow storm chasers out there, this being my first post.

I was in Cranebrook in a mates backyard at the time and this is what we saw facing South around 7pm.

There was alot of movement and clouds were being sucked in from all directions,
just awesome to watch!

Great photos all - I love the colours in those photos Wol.
We pretty much missed out here in Narrabri yesterday, lots of action south and north of us though. The activity in the north developed very quickly and there was a burst of warnings coming from the BOM as they kept expanding the warning area.
Dave

PS- I heard that 2,500 panes of glass were shattered on the glass houses at the CSIRO Plant Industry facility in Canberra during the big hail storm. Pretty sad for those guys, hope it doesn't ruin too many experiments.

A couple of lightning pics from last night (1st March). Rodney was over at my place for a BBQ and storms which formed in the Moree region surprisingly made it over to the Northern Rivers. There was a lot of CG action well to the west, and a lot of obscured anvil crawler chain reaction type lightning spreading east south-eastward.   It was very difficult to photograph but fun to watch and listen to the booming thunder.  Got 9mm of rain from it as well.

Hello

I filmed the life cycle of a thunderstorm cell over Penrith from start to near end and took some time lapse of that storm (Saturday afternoon 24/2/2007). At one stage, the storm was very lightning active. I filmed and observed a high number of CGs. Its peak phase lasted about 30 minutes.

It was quite an impressive storm at times prior to its weakening phase and I understand it caused flash flooding in parts of Penrith and produced 2 cm hail as well. It caused extensive blackouts in that region.

Not to be outdone later, I was with friends at Castle Hill Saturday evening and we successfully finished up in the heart of that evening storm. It dropped approximately 36 mm of rain where we were in that suburb which turned out to be the highest rainfall from that storm anywhere in Sydney. It caused extensive overland flows and local flash flooding due to the intensity of rain that was falling. There was no hail but some power blackouts occurred across parts of that suburb.

While running around outside in it and looking for shelter, a significant lightning strike and loud thunderclap overhead sent us scurrying for shelter.

Beautiful shot of the stattaco.  Bet the cows were unimpressed by it!

I'd like also if you'd have the watermarks off from your photos - my personal view also :)

Just to let you know that your photos are copyrighted automatically under the Australian Copyright Act regardless, as you are the 'author'.  It in fact does not cost you anything, you don't have to register or pay for copyrights.  Watermarks like yours and others just remind people that it's copyrighted - but most are not aware that it's automatic in Australia.  Unless your'e employed to take photos (like a journo) for the exclusive use of a newspaper then you don't necessarily 'own' the shots, but if your'e a freelance snapper like the rest of us your photos are copyrighted by law automatically.  Sleep easy.

Just for your info fellas/gals.

Mike,

Even though we have copyright on our own pics, it doesn't stop people especially foriegners from taking them and using them without permission. The main thing to stop people from doing that is really to limit the size and the quality.

Didn't anyone else see the surprisingly well structured little LP cell that developed over Kurrajong on Friday the 2nd? I just happened to be right there with a camera. Check out the amazing sun beams! It pays to always take a camera with you as I was actually about to have dinner a Kravings when I noticed this cell devlop.

Hi Jeff,

Absolutely amazing storms including the surprising rotation. I saw them on your camera but nothing beats seeing them this size!

The LP was observed by me but by the time I would have gone for it it would have disappeared or weakened. I was on the way home from the pub. Excellent - I am glad you got it as it verifies I was not seeing things amongst the haze. I am not sure if others noticed larger similar structures to the north perhaps near the Wyong area.

Jimmy Deguara

Here's a short slideshow I made of the front as it was approaching the Penrith area...

HugeUploads Download Link (http://www.hugeuploads.net/291approaching storm.zip)  (not the best file hosting site,
you'll need to wait about a minute before you can download the file)

Download zip file to desktop, unzip file, open folder, and double click on 'index.html'
then click play.

Your photos are just awesome Jeff! Perfect positioning.

Did you (or anyone else) notice rotation in the mid-levels with this storm? I could not see from where I was, but the wall cloud had signs of rotation and as i said in my post, I think a few 'needle' funnels developed. I was not sure whether the low level circulation developed due to storm scale processes or whether, as per Nov 2005 near Jimmy's place, the storm seemed to develop a brief but tight low-level circulation, with multiple and quite distinct funnel clouds, and without any obvious deep rotation in the parent storm.

Will look at your photos tonight wol, due to download issues here.
