Title: Eastern NSW / SE QLD Storms 10th - 12th Feb 2007
Post by: Jeff Brislane on 10 February 2007, 08:56:23 AM
I'm sick of waiting for someone else to start a thread for tomorrow! First analisys from last nights 12z data shows a reasonable setup for storms to occur along the Ranges from the Snowy north to the Upper Hunter and maybe the lower Mid North Coast. Instability is nothing spectacular like the other day but it's still good enough for storms to possibly reach severe levels, ie 2cm hail or 100km/h wind gusts. There is the presence of a weak upper trough which might spice things up a bit.

A few problems are an oversaturated atmosphere aloft, weak wind shear and un-impressive lapse rates but if you can get over these hurdles you will still see some enjoyable storms. Anyway i'm still waiting for 00z data to see if things have improved or weakened.

Jeff.

Im sick of not knowing how to read skew-T charts properly and LI wind flow charts properly so I can at least have an idea of what is to come tomorrow as well, even though i'm not in NSW!  With LIs of -6.23 and CAPE of 2850, CIN 42 CAP 2.34 and LFC 781 surely must mean storms!

I almost did it again!!

Yes this morning's Darwin sounding looks nice, should be something up there!
The big problem in Australia is that the stations are so few and far between, hence many people don't bother with Skew-Ts, or use them to see if the models have a handle on mid- and upper- levels, or use only the skew-ts generated by a model. In Sydney, for eg, what use is the morning sounding, from near the coast, if you have an approaching upper trough and destabilisation occuring. Things change and the conditions on the sounding might better reflect what is happening 200km offshore. The afternoon sounding well, things are often already happening so it might be too late.

As far as reading skew t's, there are some good articles around...Paul prepared a really nice web page on soundings ......do you still have that Paul.....it was many years ago? If not, start a thread, post a sounding and we'll see what everyone has to say.

Tomorrow looks ok for the ranges around here.  OOz had downgraded a little but that 1c cooling at h5 corresponds with maximum heating  ;D

Yep, thanks.  I won't go into skew-t's too much in this topic, JD will kill me as I have a bad habit of posting stuff in the wrong place.  I do have a skew-t topic elswhere on the forum, so maybe you could go there and have a crack - i'm waiting for answers!  I've lots of info on skew-t's - it's deciphering LI's that i'm after - anyway enough said.

hope the atmosphere unstable in NSW!

Hi Dave, I'm not sure whether you were referring to this Paul  ;D, but it's been a while since I've had any of my own work online.  I can recommend this excellent site on understanding SkewT's (and meteorology in general).  It really is tops!  Here is the link for the SkewT module: http://deved.meted.ucar.edu/mesoprim/skewt/index.htm

Definitely you Paul - you had a great webpage....gee must be 1998 or thereabouts! (ps still battling the cold that I had on Weds, so did have the energy to take advantage of a stormy Saturday on the Tablelands.

I'd say there would be a nice shelf cloud crossing the Hume Hwy south of Moss Vale right about now, going by Sydney and Canberra radars.

I've been out with Kim today and we managed to intercept a beautifull severe storm west of Mittagong. It had sustained inflow for at least 1 hour before collapsing and I believe also anti-cyclonic base rotation, wait to you see some of the pics as it was just increadible. We also watched the line of cells west of Sydney on the way home which are rumbling outside now.

Did Jimmy report the 5cm hail at Rylstone?

Jeff.

Very interesting rainfall situation developing.  I'd say there's a good chance of flash flooding for the South Coast.  You can see on the radar and vis satellite imagery what would be a NE/SW oriented convergence line extending from about Batemans Bay NE'wards.  This line appears to be producing very intense little cells moving SW'ly with echoes in the 5th highest reflectivity band.  These cells are merging with weakening continental storms moving in from the west.

I headed out to the Lithgow area today and encountered a couple of intense storm cells around 3:30-4pm. The rain was absolutely torrential in all of them and created rivers flowing down the hills around Ben Bullen. It all drained away very quickly though as when I returned half an hour later most of it had soaked into the ground.

The best storm was at Mt Piper power station where I encountered a number of close lightning strikes and a couple of minutes of small hail of around pea size or slightly larger which I have recorded on video. I was hoping to see a lightning bolt hit the Mt Piper chimney, but it was not to be. Twice today though I saw lightning hit in my immediate vicinity with the first at Lydsdale and the second at Ben Bullen. The thunder was very loud from these strikes even with the car window wound up  :)

That storm you were on Jeff looked very mean on radar. It had purple in it for a couple of frames.

Jeff, If your photos from the Mittagong storm you chased today are as good as the LP supercell of February 05 , then they are worth waiting for. Looking forward to seeing them. Matt, I remember stopping in Cullen bullen during a thunderstorm last year and the intensity of the rain was torrential but the lasting impression of the storm was the booming deafening sounds of thunder after  strikes hit the hills to the west of the village. The sound reverberated around the township as well as our brains!.  Looking forward to seeing your efforts as well. Tonight we're at The Entrance where an offshore pulse storm failed to deliver a decent lightshow after a promising start. Cheers, Con.

Good evening. Just a quick reply from me.

Me and my brother were on the Canyonleigh storm just west of  Moss Vale . We also met up with Michael Thompson once again. This storm was a slow mover, but still quite severe bringing  1-2cm hailstones, torrential rainfall, and a barrage of pulsating CGs. The flash flooding near the Exeter turnoff was quite significant with some fields covered with water, and rivers crossing the freeway.

Well done guys - nice photos Pingtang and look forward to yours Jeff, Matt!! Some NICE storms down there today. I was saying to Paul on the phone that I hope someone was on that nice cell southwest of Moss Vale. Was anyone down near Bungendore - Captains Flat area later on as there was some pretty intense stuff there as well...nice chase country too.

Some good steady rain here in southern Sydney atm and some thunder which has been on and off for over an hour now.

yes a very respectable shelf cloud !!!  ...  I hit it just south of the Mossvale turnoff and within a few k's had to pull over cuz the rain was so heavy, and some small hail.   Waited there for a while on the downhill slope a km or 2 before the end of the freeway.
some nice cg's but a lot of cc's hidden in the clouds. turned around and went back up via Bargo and Picton.  Many large CG's and CC's  we stopped at the rest area on top on the hills on the nth side of Picton and got under shelter to do some pics.
The rain was torrential and there was a wonderful barrage of big CG's in a field not far from us.
The storm moved to the east and we continued up nth and east via the Camden bypass, then went out on the Appin rd  to a clear area jst a couple of km's short of Appin  where we watched the storm die out as it went over the coast.

will upload pics  soon,  cant log on to my www pages for ftp at the moment  and dont think i can post directly to here

cheers

Hi again  :)

woken this morning ~ 0545Hrs EDT with torrential rain  here in West Ryde,  still raining at I type but has substantially lightened up.  heard ~ 8 good rumbles of thunder between ~ 0630 and 0700hrs EDT

and see on weather radar there is another large active cell west of Campbelltown again.
maybe head out again today ....  CAPE and Li's seem to be concentrated ~ the Newcastle and a bit nth of region.

Quite a fruitful days chasing.

Started at Canyonleigh ( the storm that David referred to as being SW of Moss Vale ). I again had storm chaser convergence with PingTang. We watched a developing updraft for about 15 mins, it then became outflow dominated in a big hurry.

I split west only to encounter hail and torrential rain, so headed east back to the Hume Hwy just south of the Sutton Forest servo which was a battle zone with scores of cars parked under any tree that looked like offering shelter from the hail. Hail was to 2cm in size, but the odd larger bang on the roof told me there was perhaps larger. ( Hi Dave Nelson, you must have been  one of those cars ! )

(http://ozthunder.com/chase/100207c_t.jpg) (http://ozthunder.com/chase/100207c.jpg)

The storm weakened into a broad rain area so i headed home. I was curious to see how the now weak storm would react to the coastal moisture having already hung myself on a forecast of flash flooding type storms on another forum. I was not disappointed as it kicked up a convergence line of activity just east of the Illawarra escarprment, this was lightning active. Just as I was putting the camera on tripod a transformer was hit on the other side of the lake. I would have made a great picture, instead I got this second prize.

(http://ozthunder.com/chase/100207d_t.jpg) (http://ozthunder.com/chase/100207d.jpg)

As I taking the lightning I caught this suspicious lowering out of the corner of my eye. The jury is out on this, it persisted for about 5mins. It would be easy to dismiss except the first bit to condense was on the ground ! not from cloud downwards. At no stage did the cloud tag rise upwards either.

(http://ozthunder.com/chase/100207e_t.jpg) (http://ozthunder.com/chase/100207e.jpg)

Here is the same lowering about 5 mins later and a little further southwards along the convergence line, again it is all the way to ground - guess where I will be looking tomorrow morning !

(http://ozthunder.com/chase/100207f_t.jpg) (http://ozthunder.com/chase/100207f.jpg)

I also have video that I have not reviewed yet, but it was near total dark so the video may be useless.

Lastly I headed east as it started to rain and took this picture from a picnic shed at Windang Bridge,

(http://ozthunder.com/chase/100207g_t.jpg) (http://ozthunder.com/chase/100207g.jpg)

We had thunder on and off until around 4am here. I live 1 km from the ocean and therefore missed the heavier rain. I went for a 3am drive westwards ( only a storm chaser can do a 3am run ) and the rain was much heavier near the escarpment with flash flooding of creeks near Macquarie Pass.

The chase yesterday was a rush job as I was supposed to be home looking after the kids... But around 1pm radar showed some development near Glen Innes and I just took off estimating I would have 2 hours to get to the target if those cells kept going and the shear forecast was about right. GFS had undercooked the instability on the northern part of the Northern Tablelands though.

The drive from my place to Tenterfield normally takes 2 hours, so the 1 hour 50 mins was good going. I stopped for fuel and then noticed the bloody vibration through the steering was back. Had only just had the wheels balanced and aligned on Thursday after I noticed a problem on Wednesday evening. Grrrrrrrr,  I pressed on even though it seemed worse than the other day.

Headed straight south down the New England Highway as the severe storm came into view properly - I had caught glimpses of it in the distance during the drive up the Divide. It really did appear to be a very powerful storm.  I wasn't sure of side roads here, but sort of knew there were some roads east of the highway before I would get to Bolvia Hill and too many trees. Sandy Flat was the location where I took the pics of the base. A local stopped to check if I was ok, so asked him what the road was like to the east .... "you can go 8ks east with mainly just open paddocks, then it goes north but into trees".

I headed east and soon encountered strong outflow, a little rain and then sporadic hail 1cm to 2cm diameter. The cell had just beaten me and was passing north of the dirt road I was on. I measured some stones then caught a glimpse into the northern valley - it was white with hail !  The road then took me right into the hail swathe where the cover of mainly 3-4cm stones was impressive. I don't recall seeing so much hail cover from large hail before, actually I haven't seen this much with small hail either.  I measured some stones at almost 5cm. I moved a bit further north where the hail fog and snow effect was magic.

All the while deep booms of thunder echoed through the area from the hailstorm, and also another storm to the SW.

After I had the hail fun, I headed back north to Tenterfield to keep out of the rain and see if the next cell would be any good.

The cell I had been on intensified again just NE of town but it was moving into inaccessible country and I was still worried about the car problem.

Larger view: http://australiasevereweather.com/temp/forum/photos/2007021009.jpg

I waited back in town briefly and thought I may get the NRMA to check it as I could not see anything wrong with the tyres. Mobile phones dead - no signal ! great - maybe the tower had been disabled by the storm. So much for getting it checked. Used a payphone but it went to the local's mobile answering machine. Really useful. Just as well the car wasn't completely stuffed.

I decided to keep going to the next potential target as I had expected more storms to persist from the Inverell direction into the evening. I ended up about 50ks west of Tenterfield on the Bruxner Highway. I was hoping the mobile phone tower was ok down this way and just as well it was - so I could at least phone home and let Al know what was going on :)  The vibration in the front of the car had become very bad now so I took my fourth look at the front right - major bulge in the tyre surface - not sure why I could not detect it previously - and no wonder it was bad. Changed it and was right after that !!  I suspect this was the cause of the problem I went into get fixed on Thursday - not happy Jan !

Cells developed into the evening providing some lightning opportunities though nothing was really close. The main one developed west of Texas and moved east just north of me. I tried a few locations near Glenlyon Dam and then back along the Bruxner. Several big anvil crawlers occurred and interesting roll and shelf cloud structures on the southern side of the storm were lit up.

Hi guys,

I got back from Saturday and Sunday chasing last night. For Sunday, the action took of late so not much to report given I had to be back and beat all the kangaroos so I mised out on what would have been an impressive lightning show. But Saturday was pretty nice particularly the cell that passed near Gulgong.

Jef, no I wasn't the one who reported the 5cm hail near Rhylestone. I was too far away when those updrafts became very strong and moved off the range. Similar near Scone apparently. Powerful overshoots.

Some nice storms all around from the various chasers here in Sydney well done! I'll post the pictures when I get home later.

I agree MichaelB, MichaelT it does look like a vortex of some sort (and the other photos of the storm are excellent!). I dont think the radar would pick anything else up since it would be on too small a scale - always worth a look at the storms around at the time though. Any evidence of any localised strong winds Michael, if you have had a chance to check it out?

Those hailstorms storms further north were very nice too - that hail fog pic is a beauty. The last week has been excellent....

Hi,

I spoke to Jeff Brislane earlier and he suggested that the storm near Rylestone producing hail to 5cm was on Saturday. This was east of the storm I chased - no wonder it had a deep green tinge right through and was very lightning active at the time. I could not get under it in time - where I was hail to 1cm and drenching heavy rain occured. I was heading back from near Wellington when I noted the storms there were a little higher based.

Anyway pictures will be up soon.

Good afternoon.

I have a few more pics of the Canyonleigh storm.Photos taken approx 3kms west of the Hume Highway.

The storm is very much outflow dominant now.Heres a pic of a developing shelf cloud. Torrential rain and 1-2cm hail immediatly followed.

Some brilliant pulsing CGs ahead of the main core.Despite the heavy rain,I pulled over and tried my luck. I couldent nail a good one,but im still quite happy with this.

The storm weakened into a mass of thundery rain,so we headed for home.Just after nightfall a convergence line developed 5kms to the east of my house.

The thunder and lightning continued throughout the night, along with some very heavy rainfall. I recorded 110millimetres in just 6hours between 10am and 4pm. Nowra AWS 10kms to my south recorded 103mms in 5hours between 9am and 2pm,Sunday. Heres some links of some of the flooding near Nowra AWS.

Nice photos pingtang. We just had a great storm build up very quickly just in front of an appraching squall line that at one stage spanned from Rowena to Stanthorpe.
The rainfall looked EXTREMELY heavy, although it was concentrated north of town - the most our automatic weather stations recorded was 15mm in an hour but I suspect the totals were two or three times this in other areas.

Very impressive shelf cloud and some other lowerings:

Here are a few pics of the storm we watched west of Mittagtong. We were heading west to intercept the cells on the Dividing range but we never got any further than the top of the last decent before goodmans ford. When we got there we realised pretty quickly that it was not in any hurry so we stayed there and watched the whole show. I first saw the base at 3:50pm and started taking photos at 4pm. By 4:25 it was starting to become undercut and I took my last pic below at 4:40pm. It dropped heaps of cg's including many branched stacattos. We never got into the outflow so I have no idea if there was hail but I know it would have been a treacherous drive up the mountain to Wombeyan Caves with the intensity of the outflow.

We had an easterly blowing for nearly the whole time we were there and at times it was quite gusty and there was good inflow into the base and good speed in the upmotion of scud under the base.

Hi David,

I changed the title to include your action there. Nice shelf cloud. It looks like the entrance to Narrabri?

Pintang, Michael T, Michael Bath, et al nice photgenic storms - well done! Nice green tinge in some of the pictures - that is what I enjoy seeing:) Nice hail drifts there Michael! I posted the same time as you Jeff - so I will add very nice lookout perspective of the severe storm you were on Jeff! All the storms you guys were on Sunday are photogenic.

I will add a couple of pictures basically from Saturday's chase - Sunday was not a proper chase given I had to leave whatever was developing out there. The main centre of attention was this cell that passed east of Gulgong Mudgee line and produced the report 5cm hailstones at Rylestone. Based on my timing there was little chance of me intercerpting it unless I headed towards Ulan and possibly east of there. I only had to be there perhaps 15 - 20 minutes earlier!

Correction - the cell that produced the 5cm hail was further east this was next in line but does not appear intense on radar - perhaps attenuation?

Near Wellington

The Rylestone storm near Gulgong now north of Gulgong - it seem to be moving rapidly from my perspective

I gave chase up towards Dunedoo in case of new development but I guess should have taken the road to Ulan - time to buy a compass:)

All storm pics for this day

Not much the next day leaving too early in case of Kangaroos (even then on the way to Lithgow one Kangaroo followed another as they charged across the road) in front of me

Hi all, did a chase Sunshine Coast, Kilcoy, Kingaroy, Wondai, Gympie and return Sunshine coast Sunday. Chaser convergence occurred briefly with Anthony and Dave-wx. Some lovely structure at times but enjoyed the lightning just before dark..... Was too wet after dark to go some awesome crawlers streaking across the sky.

Jeff,
It's just great how that sequence of shots of that advancing storm enshroud each hill as it approaches your viewpoint. That parched landscape certainly needed  that moisture. The inflow /outflow interface  and turbulence features are well photographed. The lightning is a special bonus. Poweful image there Jimmy of the Rylstone storm and Rodney's c.g blasts are crystal clear. Cheers, Con.

Jimmy,

I agree with Dave that the structure in the 3rd photo is very interesting. What direction were you looking at the time?

G'day Con, good to hear from you again lately.

Regards Jeff.

Jeff and David,

The photograph was looking generally north travelling along the road between Gulgong to Dunedoo. The base photographs coincide with this feature but about 15-20 minutes prior to the feature.

Michael B, others - the lowering was just after sunset, say 7:45 pm, possibly a bit later as it was almost dark.,

The convergence line had just developed aided by outflow of the stuff further west earlier. The line than persisted as we know for several hours.

Surface winds were calm, although the lightning illuminated pic looks like an approaching guster, it was not, it was all training into the line and heading S/SW.

Nearest marked location on radar would be Dapto.

Thanks for that extra info MichaelT.

btw - did anyone see the footage of a flash flood near Merriwa on the 10th ?  Radar (Newcastle 256) shows three cells converging into one larger cell right where it occurred. The footage is impressive:

Hi Michael,

Yes that is rather impressive and certainly does illustrate what not to do with car! They obviously saw it occur elsewhere and came there to watch it.

I did hear of 4 inches of rain falling in quick timing in that region!

Hi Michael,

I just realised I was in this region chasing on the 10th February. Where was the flash flood located? The figures I quoted were the day before.
