The question has been raised in private discussion as to whether or not Penrith's AWS temperature observations are accurate due to its location with surrounding lakes. How can it be hotter than Richmond with the mittigating effects of nearby water? I have no reason to believe that Penrith's AWS is inaccurate but as often as I remember I will post comparison observations here between Richmond and Penrith that occured between the hours of 11am to 5pm. So far today Penrith has exceeded richmond by 0.6 degrees over a similar timeframe around 2pm.

Without knowing the exact locations of the two weather stations and their proximity to water, it would seem to me that Penrith is a flat place with lots of development. The concrete/roads houses will all reflect a certain amount of heat. Richmond on the other hand is not as built up, with more bush/farmland around which might absorb the heat a bit better?
I guess the only way to tell is to have people at both locations with accurate thermometers comparing temps with each other and the BoM readings. I have a temperature reading on a multimeter that measures to 0.1 degree increments, so if someone else had one we could compare at the one location to see how close they are, then do the comparison.

Some images courtesy of Google Earth showing the surroundings of both Penrith and Richmond AWS. With the Penrith image, the lake just to the north could be full now as this is an old image. With the richmond image nothing much would changed.

A close up of the Penrith AWS though does reveal that it appears to be surrounded by an earth wall, perhaps to keep dust directly out of the sensors? This could possibly have an effect on the readings.

Absolutely insane dry and wet bulb temperatures today and even worse than Darwin or Katherine. Potentially one of the hottest humid air massess to pass over Sydney in years. Richmond is hotter and has reached a higher dewpoint peak.
Strike that, Penrith just passed Richmond for max temperature.

A close up of the Penrith AWS though does reveal that it appears to be surrounded by an earth wall, perhaps to keep dust directly out of the sensors? This could possibly have an effect on the readings.
Jeff, it definitely can but will it have an impact in winter with warmer minimum temperatures than Richmond.

Funnily enough about three weeks ago there was an article in the paper here about the validity of the readings from Penrith AWS. Some local wrote to the paper and suggested that his thermometer was more accurate because the AWS was near water and and was therefore moderated by its influence. He suggested that the AWS was under estimating the daily temps by at least 2 degrees! Apparently the BoM wouldn't comment when contacted by the Penrith Press!
What can you say?...
