Its been looking good for a couple of days now, hopefully there will be some decent cells to chase. Its the best I have seen for some time, so hopefully the models hold true and it comes to fruition.

There is only a slight flow through into southwest QLD at this stage.

Happy and safe chasing

Col.

Wow radar and lightning tracker has lit up like a Xmas tree on the last few frames around Moree. Shauno, I hope you can get out there and see something. Would be nice to see some action from you again! I toyed with the idea of heading out to Tenterfield this morning but decided against it due to it being a bit risky. If things continue the way they are atm I'll be kicking myself!!!

Upper Western N.S.W. Storm Report Sunday November 7th 2010

Hi guys,

Wow radar and lightning tracker has lit up like a Xmas tree on the last few frames around Moree. Shauno, I hope you can get out there and see something. Would be nice to see some action from you again! I toyed with the idea of heading out to Tenterfield this morning but decided against it due to it being a bit risky. If things continue the way they are atm I'll be kicking myself!!!

Yep went straight out for a look and a few shots earlier Pato! We have a good pulse setup currently in this area. Updrafts are huge and anvils are pretty crisp coming from the two larger cells sitting around us currently. Many isolated smaller cells growing rapidly around the Ridge now also (3:56pm ESDT). There was a nice base on the main updraft as I arrived out there around 3pm. Took plenty of photos so I'll try and put something together later if I don't see any action tonight. Managed to see one CG but conditions are far too bright out. The cell was around 30k's to our NNE and pretty slow moving.

I will definitely keep a close eye on things now. I'm hoping they stick around until tonight for some lightning ops.
Take care if chasing guys!
Shauno.

Hey Guys,
Just got back from a chase of the Macedon Supercell. Was an incredible storm with amazing structure. My chase started about 3:30 this arvo as I watched a cell on radar in the Maryborough district explode. I jumped in the car and headed from Melton, up to Gisborne, Riddells Creek to just south of Romsey. Managed to stay out of the outflow and get clear view of the base most of the time. Sorting through the photos I appeared to have captured a funnel cloud in two of the shots.

Very nice base there! Clean structure. Did you get any other pictures of the base as it approached?

Storm Chase Dunedoo to Coolah to Quirindi

I decided to chase storms in this region given the prospect of severe storms including supercells to develop in the region. The first cell developed just west of Dunedoo.

It seemed to remain weak for some time but as it approached Coolah really intensified.I tried to maintain position in between the two main cells with a mountain range in between!

I was able to spot the interesting rain free base that David suggested produced a brief couplet. I encountered hailstones to 2cm from this storm as it intensified E of Coolah. The storm gradually weakened so I had one only option to head to Merriwa and get over the range to Willow Tree. The storm persisted with a nice base and microbursts before it eventually rapidly collapsed moving back to an easterly direction.

I got some lightning but most of the lightning was further west.

Hey Jimmy,
I took a series of about 50 shots of the SC as it approached. I'll have a sort through them, and post any that may reveal further structure. It spilt almost immediately as it crossed the ranges, with the southern section breaking up, and the nothern section seemed to merge into cells further east. I chased further east on a secondary road which unfortunately came to an abrupt end, effectively ending my chase. So I only captured the SC for the last 30 mins before the split. Conditions stayed relatively calm in my position, as I remained away from the out-flow. The storm was quite lightning active, but restricted to intra-cloud lightning, mainly from the anvil.
Had a blast with this storm, very photogenic. Can't wait for more to come. Perhaps Friday........
Cheers all,
Chris.

Typical, the day I sell my car we get a good storm. anyway....

I was still able to get some stuff here at my home in Miranda (South Sydney), We had a few hailstones, biggest i found just smaller than a 5c coin. When i say a few i mean you had to actually look hard to find them in the grass.

Few good strikes around but due to living at the bottom of a hill I don't have a good view.

Heres what I have to offer anyhow.

Hi all,

I'm just watching this line coming towards now here at Lightning Ridge but, though the lightning looks impressive on LT & radar it all looks a bit weak -sort of blueish and messy. If the rain precedes it all to heavily then I'll wait until it passes and see what happens.

I still have to process the structure shots from yesterday's cells. We had a very active cell near Walgett last night. It remained highly active until the early hours of this morning! I stood in the back yard watching the flickering which was about every second on average. Shame it wasn't here or a little closer!

Take care if chasing tonight!

St Marys Thunderstorm (Western Sydney) 8 November 2010

Please find below a small number of photos that I took of a strong thunderstorm that hit the St Marys region (Western Sydney) this afternoon. I took a half day flexi specifically for this weather event.

Following my lunch at 1 pm, I went to the top of the Auburn Council car park at Auburn and snapped numerous photos of a developing thunderstorm that was situated over the lower Blue Mountains to the west. There were other thunderstorm cells and cloud towers south west of Sydney at the time but I decided to target this storm (Pictured) because it kept producing new updraft towers and showed no signs of decaying.

Following this, I drove down the M4 Motorway towards Penrith. Near St Marys I found myself close to its base and began to experience heavier and heavier rain. I turned onto Mamre Road, drove north towards the St Marys Town Centre where I drove into high winds that was stripping leaves and bark off trees.

I drove into torrential rain and near the railway station, I drove into hail. As the core was overhead, I drove into a side street and parked the car. The St Marys locality was hit by at least three bursts of hail at least in the range of 1 to 2 cm in size although I did see a few hailstones that seemed to be larger on the ground and I did hear a few louder thuds on the car roof from falling hailstones. I could not get out of the car due to the amount of rain and hail that was falling.

One of the photos I took following the storm is a flooded road in Carinya Avenue. This shows how much rain fell. The storm weakened further to the east but appears to have had a significant impact around St Marys.

The photos referred to are attached below.

St Marys Storm 8/11/2010

Following the thunderstorm that occurred at St Marys, the storm went into a decaying phase, however I moved into the open and looked skywards and saw a developing updraft tower occurring almost overhead to where I was. It seemed that a portion of the storm was developing a new lease of life. I could see rain curtains and possible hail dropping from near its base but I could also see cloud building into a single new cloud tower. It developed rather quickly before building into a new anvil that merged with the parent anvil cloud with some mammatus formations.

I have attached 3 photos to show the cloud tower observed at the rear of the storm at St Marys today.

Storms south of Blacktown 8/11/2010

Following the thunderstorm at St Marys, I drove back to Prospect to get a better look at new thunderstorms developing to the south. I went to William Lawson Park at Prospect to observe thunderstorm cells develop to the west and south. I did not chase these due to peak hour traffic but I was able to take some very good photos. The storms were developing to the south west and seem to train echo (Follow one another) towards the south east. One of the photos provided shows a significant base. Cloud to ground lightning was observed from most of the cells that developed.

I have provided three photos to show what was happening between 3 pm and 6 pm today south and south west of Blacktown.

Things certainly fired up quickly this afternoon. I had checked the radar about 20 minutes before the EWN warning came through to see all the action was the other side of Canberra. When the storms developed they all came up quite quickly and with little warning.

At Chatswood we just had a bit of rain and thunder with no lightning seen. Coming home I saw some lightning to my south, but home at Rydalmere we missed most of the action with some heavy falls further south around Liverpool and Campbelltown, also with some severe warned storms further south. Though we did get some very small hail about 5:30.

From about 7:30 there would some good crawlers visible to the SW, but as it got closer and I thought about getting the camera out low level cloud came in and obscured the view. From around 8:30 a band of heavy storms came over, though most of the lightning was rain wrapped so again I didn't get the camera set up, though saw one close hit near Ermington and after the bulk of the storm passed over the sky lit up and a bolt hit behind the house somewhere within a couple of hundred metres - I was looking the other way where most of the action was. We have only had about 10mm here.

Reports that Holsworthy managed 47mm in an hour between 5:30 and 6:30, and Kurnell had a wind gust of 82 kph.

Sydney was certainly in the firing line yesterday. Must have been some sort of boundary anchored across the southern half of the basin with so many cells following similar tracks until the main trough line pushed northeast late on.

It was a busy afternoon for the BoM with 14 detailed STWs between 2pm and 9pm !

It sure was i went to bed at 1am and realized a orange cell just to the northeast was coming in but i said oh itll be just a quick shower but i woke up and what do you know almost 70mm!

My nan lives in Wentworthville and she said yesterday 3 storms missed her but then she witnessed hail she said just below 5C coin size although she tried to take a picture with her phone for me she did not succeed.

Thursday looks like a good day for the NR as well as Wednesday so bring it on :)

Hi guys,

I'm just in the process of editing all the lightning photos from last night -we had five highly active storms all round us!- but here's a two shot pano of the large cell that was between here and Collarenebri that fired up on Sunday afternoon.

This photo was during the secondary pulse of the main updraft which was evident on radar. There was a few CG present but as you can see the light wasn't kind enough for lightning photography though I really enjoyed watching a nice cell out on the plains.

Kindest regards,
Shauno.

STW issued again for this afternoon in NSW.

Locations which may be affected include Scone, Cessnock, Maitland, Walgett, Coonamble and Lightning Ridge.

Radar shows scattered/shattered storm cells fragmented through out the region unlike yesterdays sweeps of well structured formations.

Just hot and muggy in Brisbane and no action for us.

Take care

Yesterday's , 8th November 2010, storms that fired up after 3pm to the south of Parramatta certainly had some interesting base features to them as indicated in the following photos, with the bases ingesting then gusting out , the 3rd shot was the best of the rfb's in the afternoon bracket before the main line came through

Upper Western N.S.W. Storm Report And Photos Monday 8th November 2010

Just went through and sorted a few lightning/structure photos from last night so I can get a few up now.
I ended up heading out around 6:30pm EDST only to realise there were five active storms all around us. Four of those were part of that nice frontal line of active storms and one was a separate cell sitting out to the NE. This NE cell was the most active for the beginning but the approaching line really went nuts around 8pm.
Not much in the way of structure (as is the usual out here) but there was some really strong outflow at times! I had my pupils blasted with sand particles and it felt like a severe case welders flash when I got home.
I stayed out there until the storms converged overhead and it started to rain. There was some nice Mammatus and inflow banding at times! There's a bit in some of the photos.
Temps were up around 35˚c and humidity was high so I was excited to get out there amongst it and blow the cobwebs out of the old Canon  ;D

I'll post the same photos that I post on the photography sites around the place hence the names on them. This saves me doing several at once. I'll try and do them in sequence. The first four are of the storm cell sitting to the North East. This merged with the main storm line around 8:30pm EDST. The last photo is what was behind me. This was the main line of storms coming from the North West. Town is right in the middle of the last photo. That line had a partial shelf here and there along with nice inflow banding. I will post another photo of that soon.

It's definitely good to be back at it!
Take care if chasing.
Kindest regards,
Shauno.

Back to Sydney (8th Nov).

Had an observation session with Paul G on the work carpark at Nth Ryde beginning around 4pm. We watched as cells put out nice bases and dumped / gusted out as they tracked SE across the southern metro. Not the sort of left propogating behaviour that we were interested in! Finally a cell took off and developed a shelf cloud....looked ok esp with some savage CGs.

Decided to 'chase'  so headed down towards Lane Cove. While in traffic I noticed scud rapidly moving into the storm, and figured things would get interesting. Finally decided to pull over at Five-Dock just as the main cell organised nicely. Quite dramatic infeed from the north / north east, I'll put some video of that up later.

Some video captures.

I do have timelapse of it as well.

Interesting.

As a side issue and I don't have the plots with me, we now have remote monitoring on some of our microwave links around Sydney. The graps for the ones around here such as Parramatta to Crows Nest showed a good dip in signal strength around 5:30 when the first brief storm came through, then about 8:30 as the big line crossed we dropped 18 dB in signal strength.

That equates to a received signal strength about 1.6% of normal, so that's the effect the heavy rain has on the links (they didn't fall over though).

Seconds after I had uploaded photos to my third post on this thread, there were three cloud to ground lightning strikes close to where I live with the third one knocking out the power for several seconds and ensuring a close range thunderclap.

The evening storms came through that saw three cells pass over, each one bringing bursts of heavy rainfall, wind and much lightning, much of it intra cloud. I did see a low shelf cloud pass over as the second storm started to pass over.

Final rainfall totals from this event are quite amazing as the storms were hit and miss. According to the BOM Weather stations, up until 9 am 9/11/2010 for Sydney, 65 mm fell at Holsworthy followed by 60 mm at Liverpool. Falls of 17 to 68 mm fell across south west Sydney (Worst affected) with 30 to 35 mm around Auburn and Lidcombe, 36 mm at Fairfield, 18 mm at Blacktown but only 9 mm at Seven Hills. Sydney's north shore saw much less action (3 to 9 mm), Sydney City 6.4 mm but 12 to 18 mm around Dee Why. Unfortunately the amount of rain that fell at St Marys where I was earlier is not known because there is no weather station in that locality which caught that storm cell.

Please find below two more photos of the evening cell (Base structure) that later became part of the cell that moved over Parramatta. Prior to taking these, a considerable amount of thunder was audible from the anvil cloud that spread north and east. I am looking south and west but the base is close to where I was located. Following this, the main evening storms started to come through.

On Sunday (The 7th November) me and Lightning Chaser, chased into Central Victoria intercepting a fantastic supercell near Benella. Heres a photo and some timelapse.

Following this storm Lightning Chaser headed for home as he had to work the next day. I on the other hand intercepted a nice squall line near Howlong after dark, witnessing a nice gust front and lightning.

Fantastic storm chase in Sydney's west today. Unfortunately hit a dog on the m4 at 110km/hr - wasn't very pretty, I felt so bad but it was either hit it or loose control of my car and probably flip it. Apart from that a fantastic storm cell etc. Unfortunately in the last scene, I did have a longer timelapse but my video camera ran out of power and my mate has the charger, so unable to finish it off, but you get the idea. Video below of some of the action:

This afternoon the rain certainly came down with a vengeance at Chatswood, been a long time since I have seen it raining like that. As a guide the closest station at Terrey Hills reported 35mm between 4:30 and 5pm. Made for a bit of a slow trip home. This photo taken on Victoria Avenue.

Hi,

Firstly, without focusing on anyone in particular due to my time constraints, great to see some excellent storm structures once again and lightning! The variety has been a blessing this season.

Storm Chase Western Sydney and then Gosford 10th November 2010

Began at Rouse Hill and simply began timelapse which went for 25 minutes before I stoped with the hint of outflow and headed for the cell developing over Hornsby. I only was able to make through to near Gosford  to timelapse about 10 or so minutes before the cell went linear. The bloody traffic coming in and out of Gosfrod was enough to signial the end of the chase and stop me from chasing the third cell over the Wyong vicinity.

Hi, on Sunday I chased with John Allen and got onto the same supercell as Pingtang (although we didnt meet till the next day!) and got a fantastic low strong wallcloud.  Today we chased (I was a last minute inclusion ;)) south east of Benalla and we scored a series of relatively low-topped cells, however  they continually produced wall clouds with at least one rotating which should make for nice timelapse. Thunder was near contiuous on the early cells which we were very close to and at one stage the rotation was near overhead.  Some pics of the Sunday supercell and today chase can be seen here:

Another after work special for me.  The base was quite interesting on this storm at one point, however, instability was somewhat more marginal than Monday and a storm that developed to the north probably put the final nail in the coffin of this one.  Video captures from near Berowra:

This was reported by Ron from Walcha:

Quote
Several properties 5km south west of Walcha had a massive downpour on Tuesday night. One of the people is a work colleague and he recorded 150mm between 8:15 and 9:30pm!! He lost most of the fences on his hobby farm.We got 6mm in town. We were able to watch the light show from a safe distance-just!!

That's a very impressive rainfall for that area, and betters what you'd see during extreme coastal location events. You can see the cell responsible in this radar loop. Notice the stationary red reflectivity due east of the radar (just SE of Woolbrook) between 8pm and 9.30pm EDT

Hi,

The end of the day component of the chase into the Breeza Plains - lovely country. This storm exhibited a hail core and interesting moveoment on radar - perhaps photogenic though the storm at this point coming over the range was on its last legs. I had intercepted it earlier though and had experienced hail to 2cm inside the core.

Hi Antonio,

Once I felt that wind- outflow from the storm, I took of after the next storm. Outflow results from downdrafts from the storm.

O right so as the storm was approaching closer toward you the downdraft's start to be felt is that correct? still new to these things but am willing to learn all of them.

Also noticed more wind on your video here Supercell northwestern Sydney 27th October 2010 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BP-SmnHnw8o&feature=sub#ws) and i also love the hail :)

Spectacular lightning show! I lvoe the bolts coming out in front of the shelf cloud. I alos love the fact that for each edit for the bolt, the storm had progressed closer - I recall the storms were screaming along! How long were you in that spot Michael?

Great to see some different lightning behviour.

Correct Jimmy. This storm was very fast moving. It went from close bolts to barely audible thunder in about 15minutes.

Unfortunately I wasted some time looking for a good view(There were lots of trees in the area, and very tall grass on the sides of the road) . I eventually found a good enough view but valuable time was wasted and I missed several pulsating but distant bolts because of this. The one minute of footage you have seen, has been cut down from the 12minutes I was there(I was filming the whole time). Im spewing I didn't use a tripod for my video camera, it would've made the footage even better. The footage on youtube is blocky but you get the idea.

Cheers!

Sorry about the late reply but I was going through some images and found this folder with a few shots of the outer western Sydney storm cell on the 10th of November. I tracked north along the ranges from camden and from memory looked very sever on radar. I was working in Leura and couldn't get down in time for a proper chase. This was taken from Warimoo showing a nice hailshaft on the back of this cell just before it collapsed.
