The threat of severe weather returns to the Plains today, especially along the Red River Valley region on the TX-OK border. Temperatures over portions of southern Oklahoma and north Texas are expected to climb into the mid to upper 70's, which will allow instability to build in time for of the arrival of decent wind shear. Storms should initiate this afternoon from the Dallas area all the way into east-central Oklahoma. Temperatures aloft will be very cold, so large, damaging hail will likely be the main threat today, but tornadoes and intense straight-line winds will also be possible. There will likely be a number of chasers in the field this afternoon.

Storms Exploding In Texas
Some of the richest gulf moisture of the year is making it's way northbound into Texas, and the result is convective thunderstorm development. It is some of the first severe weather in the area for 2010. Dewpoints in the upper 50's are creating just enough CAPE (Convective Available Potential Energy) to trigger convection with the help of an upper level low centered over NE New Mexico. The Storm Prediction Center has recently issued a severe thunderstorm watch and we have already seen a severe warned storm to the NW of the DFW metroplex. This is the beginning of what is anticipated to be a very active season!
