Title: UHF Radio Communications During Storm Chases

G'day everyone its Robert here, well this is my first topic posting and im kinda nervous hoping its in the right section  :-\

So far i've been on 2 chases this month with the one on 15/06/2007 being real successful but i've been thinking about how effective UHF Radio communications during storm chases as it seems to work real well in Tornado Alley (USA) im just wondering how many of you chasers use UHF CB for vehicle-vehicle comms ?

Once my South Australia storm chasing division is up and running we'll be using UHF radio for vehicle-vehicle comms every chase during Winter,Spring and Summer 2007/2008

Hi Robert,

We use them all the time here in the Northern Rivers and the rest of NE NSW. The UHF gives you several kilometres range in even hilly areas, and 50km or more range if there are repeaters in the area.   Though most of the time, chase vehicles are usually quite close together so you don't need that extra range very often. They are a much better than AM CBs.

I couldnt agree more Michael plus UHF doesnt have that reception problem like AM CB does when it comes to storms. Although i have been thinking that maybe the BOM could get Uniden or GME to make radios which would allow chasers to also pick up weather reports & warnings on a set frequency band like what NOAA uses in the USA

Hi Robert, I will find out for you re the radios from BoM for chasers and get back to you on this.  Looking forward to seeing your chasesite reports up and running, being from Adelaide originally personally I'd like to see what's happening down south when storms are in the area.

If you have any recent pics or some from the past we'd love to see them!! :)

Thanks for that Mike cause it would really help me with my storm chasing plus i am planning to buy an electronic weather station which has storm alert on it so i can be informed when theres a thunderstorm in my area although im gonna get it once i've got the money  ;)

But yeah hopefully you can find out that info for me cause i need to start some where  ;D
