Australian Severe Weather Forum

Quite widespread thunderstorm activity occurred over Northeast NSW Monday 22nd. I couldn't chase and it wasn't a good setup locally anyway with poor shear. The BoM did issue a STW for parts of the Northern Tablelands and NW Slopes and Plains for damaging winds and the potential for very heavy rainfall.

I noticed the lightning tracker was very active well into the evening near Armidale - Glen Innes.

Got a couple of pics of nearby activity from home around 5pm.  The pileus was very dramatic at times.

Unfortunate, hopefully someone got some chasing in!  A bit up here too, our non existent monsoon is in a lull but is expected to be back around Friday - so at least the weather now is favorable for storms until the wet stuff returns!

Chase 23rd January 2007

Hi,

It was a pretty long day today. First Nick, Ray and I headed out towards Lithgow only to head back east in anticipation of storms in the lower Wollemi. This occurred but struggled. Then finally as we made our way to Colo Heights, storms erupted and intensified. The storms reached severe limits and we were able to find a spot to view the storms comfortably.

After some reasonable timelapse, we decided we want core action. We hit microbursts on the northern side of Colo Heights with the most intense damage with trees on the road not far from the township centre itself perhaps 5km north. The core did contain hail but we did suspect the storm was in a weakening phase and also the main core had passed further east.

After some more storms further noth near Putty, Nick and I settled for Pizza at Riverstone awaiting more storms to pass across. We were not disappointed with some spectacular lightning activity near Richmond. Finally east towards Riverstone, Nick captured one hell of a close bolt about 200metres followed by canon thunder! Anvil crawlers were not very spectacular but I think Nick and his friend may have captured a few decent ones!

Humidity in my mate wades pants on first storm chase and outside when this one hit    110%

second pic is the storm coming out of lower blue mts (bowen mountain)

Hi guys, you sure make me jealous!  Good work with that bolt Nick   I guess your mate will be a chaser for life or never chase again after that cannon!

I bet the methane levels weren't too far behind either Nick 

Saw some good flickering from down south, indicating that there were some 'pulsing' CGs with this activity. We had a few nice rumbles this morning as well.

Cool shots!  Bet the country road with all the debris on it was a bit hairy! Great shot of that close bolt Nick.  Ya gotta love it when you get the cannon straight after - just get's the juices flowing for more!  Well done!

Certainly some nice storms yesterday for the Central Tablelands and Hunter. We missed out down here in Nowra though its not suprising. Instability appeared marginal down this way, and moisture was ordinary with Dps crashing to 5-7C west of the ranges though surface DPs were nice on the coast. Some convection was evident on the Southern highlands at first but this failed to deliver. The Penrith lightshow would have been nice. I watched the show from here for a short while, I saw lots of flashes some very bright despite the large distance between me and the storms. The trough passed through early this morning delivering just a trace of rain.

We had a lot of reddish coloured lightning at Penrith. About 3 hours before the storm passed through we had a moderate nor easter bring in a whole lot of bush fire smoke. I got some interesting shots. The lightning was very rapid fire and a lot of the bolts look pretty thin.

Brief chase this afternoon in the Northern Rivers. Was surprised anything decent took off, but it somehow managed to.

Drove under the core, but didn't cop any hail. The rain rates were incredible. Several very close CGs hit and winds got to about 80ks in gusts I'd say.

Here is another perspective after I left Mb who was heading west into it I proceeded beside it Northwards along the Nimbin road and managed to get accross infront of it on the Stoney shoot road.It Died not long after but hoped it may have found a new lease of Life from the tweed valley. Unfortinately it didn't but was certainly a photogenic storm

Never saw anything this month, in fact its been over a month since I've seen anything  >
