GLOBAL TROPICAL CYCLONE TRACKS - AUGUST 2000

ATLANTIC (ATL) - North Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico

NOTE: The tracking and intensity information for Atlantic Basin
tropical cyclones is based upon operational advisories from
the Tropical Prediction Center/National Hurricane Center,
located in Miami, Florida, USA. The MSW are based on a
1-min averaging period, which is used by all U.S. civilian
and military weather services for tropical cyclone warnings.

A special thanks to John Wallace of San Antonio, Texas, for
compiling a pre-warning track for TD-04, and also to David Roth
of HPC for sending me a track for the system which I have dubbed
"Lambda" and for the subtropical system in late August.

Note: Normally I don't include much, if any, of the pre-warning history
of disturbances in the tracks file. The pre-warning history of most
Atlantic cyclones of tropical origin is that of the tropical wave (or
weak LOW) which follows a "pre-ordained" course westward in the trades.
And from what I've seen, with most tropical cyclones originating else-
where in the monsoon trough, once a discrete LLCC is identified, it
usually doesn't travel very far before it is upgraded to a depression.
I included the early history of TD-04 because it was an interesting
little system in the subtropics which traveled quite a distance from
its origin southeast of Bermuda to the point where it was upgraded to a
tropical depression off the Florida coast.

upon ship reports. There was a ship report at 11/1800 UTC of
30 kts/1014 mb near 32.0N, 72.0 W. At 1200 UTC on 12 Aug there was a
ship report of 35-kt winds with a 1009.9 mb pressure near 36.0N, 65.0W.

Note: The information presented above on this system was supplied by
David Roth of HPC. The MSW estimates are based on the highest wind
values seen in buoy/ship/land reports on surface maps analyzed at HPC.
The track was smoothed in a few places to account for possible position
errors. The track covers only the period where a closed circulation
existed in the wind pattern.

NORTHEAST PACIFIC (NEP) - North Pacific Ocean East of Longitude 180

NOTE: The tracking and intensity information for Northeast Pacific
Basin tropical cyclones is based upon operational advisories
from the Tropical Prediction Center/National Hurricane Center
in Miami, Florida, for systems east of Longitude 140W; and
from the Central Pacific Hurricane Center, Honolulu, Hawaii,
for systems west of Longitude 140W. The MSW are based on a
1-min averaging period, which is used by all U.S. civilian
and military weather services for tropical cyclone warnings.

In addition to the systems for which operational warnings were
issued, Dr. Mark Lander of the University of Guam sent me a
track for a system south of Hawaii in late August that he feels
reached minimal tropical storm intensity. A thanks to Mark
for sending me the information on this system which I have dubbed
       with the Greek letter "Mu".

crude, but that his main purpose was to document the existence of what
he felt like had been a minimal tropical storm on 27-28 Aug.

NORTHWEST PACIFIC (NWP) - North Pacific Ocean West of Longitude 180

NOTE: The tracking information for Northwest Pacific Basin tropical
cyclones is based primarily upon operational warnings from the
Joint Typhoon Warning Center of the U.S. Air Force and Navy at
Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Comparisons were made with track coordinates
given in advisories from the meteorological services of Japan
(JMA) and the Philippines (PAGASA). In general, whenever the
center position differed by more than 40-50 nm from JTWC's, an
entry was made in the Remarks column.

The 1-min avg MSW were taken from the JTWC advisories while the
10-min avg MSW were obtained from PAGASA's advisories if the
storm were in PAGASA's area of responsibility; otherwise, they
were gleaned from JMA's advisories or high seas forecasts. In
       a few cases the 10-min MSW given by PAGASA and JMA did not agree;
in those cases I reported the higher value. The estimates of
central pressure were obtained from JMA's advisories.

Michael V. Padua, owner of the Typhoon 2000 webpage sent me the
PAGASA and JMA tracks for these systems--a special thanks to
       Michael for his assistance.

A special thanks to Dr. Mark Lander of the University of Guam
for sending me alternate tracks for the early history of Typhoon
Jelawat and for TD-14W, which he considers to have reached
       tropical storm intensity.

Note #1: No winds were specified in JMA High Seas Warning and Summary.
Reference was just a one-liner in the Summary section, which usually
implies winds less than 30 kts.

Note #2: Winds at these two times were actually given in the Warning and
Summary as 30-35 kts.

Note #3: This system was only referenced as a tropical depression by
JMA at 0000 and 0600 UTC on 20 Aug. I asked Mark Lander to review the
imagery of the system and he concurred that it was classifiable as a
30-kt tropical depression. Given the latitude and the fact that JTWC
never mentioned the system in their STWOs, it seems likely that the
LOW was perhaps more of a hybrid system than purely tropical.

SOUTHWEST INDIAN OCEAN (SWI) - South Indian Ocean West of Longitude 90E

NOTE: The tracking coordinates, 10-min avg MSW, and estimates of
central pressure were obtained from the RSMC La Reunion's
(MFR) advisories, while the 1-min avg MSW values were taken
         from JTWC's warnings.

A special thanks is due to Patrick Hoareau of Rennes, France,
(and a former resident of La Reunion) for preparing the track
for this rather rare wintertime tropical system.
